What about the other oil-producing countries outside the region? Yes, a large portion of our imports from the Middle East is crude oil; but the Philippines also sources from other suppliers like Russia, Malaysia, and other countries (possibly Latin America and Africa). For refined fuel, we import from Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, China and other regional suppliers. Which means: may alternative sources na ang Pilipinas. So, tanong: since may alternatives tayo, bumaba ba ang presyo ng langis? HINDI. Because oil prices are not determined by where the Philippines buys. Prices are set by global benchmarks. We can switch suppliers all we want, but if global prices are high, mataas pa rin ang presyo sa Pilipinas dahil private sector ang nagse-set ng presyo depende sa kung magkano ang bili nila. Alangan naman malugi sila. (Oil Deregulation Law yan). So, the claim that prices will keep rising unless we find alternatives to the Middle East speaks more of your brain’s capacity to understand the oil market.
