How a simple kitchen gadget made an entire island gain weight

obviously people just ate more rice cause it was easier to cook

Well, look at Japanese who invented rice cooker. They're not fat.

This is such obvious nonsense. It’s completely incoherent. It’s not as if it’s difficult to cook rice without a rice cooker. What fucking bollocks.

she explains it. ask grok. she's directionally correct.

Very interesting, this explains the why behind what someone once told me about cooking the rice, then putting it in the fridge overnight, which they said converts the starch into RS (resistant starch), which dramatically reduces the insulin/glucose spike

Didn't they also gain access to spam and other UPF type meats and oils too during this period?

Stop and think for second. Why and how did they get rice cookers? They finally had enough money, people started importing, cheaper rice available, junk food, much higher calories than local food. So a complete change in diet happened at the same time as rice cooker import.

As someone that lives in an island nation with Pacific Islander people, I can tell you it ain't the rice.

Interesting. So, before the automatic rice cooker, which keeps rice warm; they cooked in a pot, then cooled to room temp? That creates resistant starch? I assumed you needed to refrigerate it. Lots of asian countries use auto rice cookers, and didn't seem to gain weight.

How does she explain Korea and Japan?

I came here expecting to learn how a kitchen aid mixer required building codes to beef up the construction of my kitchen island to be able to support that monster.

If true how come Japanese not fat?! They 100% use cooker there

Not me picturing an entire island hooked on waffle makers now. Need details, I’m invested.

Sounds convoluted. Seems more likely that the rice cooker just made it faster/more convenient to make more food

Cold pizza for the win!

Bullshit. Its vegetable oils.

This is total horseshit. If you want to lose weight, you must be in a caloric deficit. Eat your rice. Every day if you please.

Where are all the "calories in vs calories out" people?

To safely get the benefits of resistant starch, cool the cooked rice quickly (máx one hour), put it straight into the fridge, and eat it within 1–2 days. When you do reheat it, ensure it is steaming hot all the way through. Rice cooker is potentially dangerous (bacteria)

@Aquafiber114720

@grok is this true or is the lady BSing?

Retarded take

So cold rice keeps you fuller long?

Its about insulin, avoid carbs at all, get lean

The issue isn’t necessarily the cooking method. Rice is not a native food in many smaller island nations. In Hawaii, rice was brought to the island by Asian immigrants. Rice isn’t grown here and Polynesian peoples only started eating rice in the last few hundred years.

There are a million alternative explanations. She cherry-picked the one that fits her business narrative. Actually disgusting.

@skdh Well this doesn't make any sense. Rice cooker or using a pot you eat the rice hot when it's finished cooking. Did we miss part of the video? There is a convenience aspect to rice cookers by keeping rice hot after cooking.

reheated rice doesn't taste as good, they're probably less likely to eat a lot of it

This lady has not been to the pacific islands

Sometimes honey has lower Glycaemic Index than rice. I dont use rice for carbs for this reason. Wholemeal pasta is a good option. @grok fact check me.

@skdh Preparing Lectins to eat can also reduce leaking gut syndrome

Brilliant. When the average person and internet personality (who figured out fear-mongering) talks of chemicals in food, they are trying to speak on something that they intuit, yet can't articulate. Then the redditors walk in and proclaim, "akshully all food is chemicals," which completely dismisses any concerns. Food as one of the last few things we can all actually control has been over engineered to be eaten alone and as often and in ever larger quantities. Our food used to be in reasonable portions, predigested by microbes, and enjoyed with each other.

@skdh Would be interesting if they discussed cannibalism as well.

Potatoes, rice and cool pasta turns into resistant starches. Best for the gut microbiome.

I for a sec thought she was wearing a kimono.
