How Big Tech Frames African Audiences As Intellectually Lazy. African social media audiences are not “dumb” - they are being conditioned. When Africans have to engage with western controlled information ecosystems, the engagement is never a fair one. Not in traditional media, and certainly not in digital media. It... always follows the same colonial playbook of extraction and social engineering over any kind of meaningful conversation or useful solution. The exploitative relationship between Western-controlled tech giants and Africa's social media audiences is often overlooked, but it shapes almost everything we see or value - and even how we understand ourselves. The low-effort, oversexualized content that has become recognised as the preferred taste of African audiences is not in fact an organic phenomenon. To put it bluntly, Western colonial tech monopolies are actively engineering African social media spaces into cesspits of anti-intellectual slop. Africa must rise to resist this intellectual suppression by building information and communication ecosystems by Africans and for Africans.show more

For decades, the West has spent billions of dollars in Africa, funding “research” “, innovation”, and “training” journalists, acquiring media houses in all but name, and backing social initiatives that do little or nothing to address the fundamental problems that Africa faces. Indeed, when it comes to supporting industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical and military research that could actually improve Africa’s economic and political situation, these generous grants are nowhere to be seen from Western nations – only from the nations farther East, who Africans are meant to believe are their enemies. It is a new form of colonial domination dressed up as generosity, and African nations must wake up to this reality.

WE AFRICANS MAY NEVER PROSPER FOR AS LONG AS WE LIVE IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE CHEAP LABOUR AND A CUSTOMER BASE FOR EUROPEANS The more I think about Pan Africanism, the State of Africa, and the prospects of its people, the more I wonder about some of the colonial programmes that African puppet governments simply continued with post-independence. For example, most of our townships were designed to be concentration camps that would force us into a cheap labour reservoir for Europeans. But not only that, they ensure we were dispossed of land, or could not use our own land that we still had. Even more, these concentration camps became a huge customer base for the same Europeans for whom we worked as they build their malls there. In a manner of speaking, they reaped us off twice: first as cheap labour, and secondly, as reliable customers for their products, right from the supermarket to the farm. It therefore may well be said that Africans and African governments need to rethink the settlement patterns of Africans. Instead of more cities, we need more roads and high speed rail so that Africans can live and work in their communities, instead of the few highways that were built for extractive purposes and run straight from the mines directly to the seaports. Let cottage industries and industrial parks be set up all over including the small towns and villages. This will ensure a total solution to the challenges of homelessness in the cities as there is more land for Africans to live in, build and even engage in small scale farming for their basic needs. One of the biggest tragedies played on us is the idea that "land has value, and for it to have value, that land has to be located next to European settlements". Our land ought to have value deep in our African settlements, and that way we won't even be beholden to banks' housing schemes through 20 or 30 year bonds. As more and more Africans build in their rural villages, let us disabuse ourselves of this notion that "that is not an investment". We do not build our homes primarily to sell, we build homes to live in with our families and leave them as a heritage to our children when we leave this world. African governments need to think beyond the Native Commissioners' ideas and accept African culture instead of always seeking to make everything look European. For example, what is the point of building skyscrapers in Africa as if we always have a shortage of housing land (except that such situations are artificially created through these cities?) The Africa of tomorrow must embrace the traditional African settlements and bring services directly to where Africans live, than drive Africans further into concentration camps, which comes with so many ills, everything from crime to drugs. And last, key point: Africans developing in their own communities means that they will provide labour to one another, be customers for one another's businesses, retain critical skills in the communities, advance community development, and ultimately, ensure the establishment of an African Economy owned by Africans! It is perhaps a tragedy of our time that places such as this in Venda, Bulilima-Mangwe, parts of KZN, etc. are leading the way, but it seems that governments aren't paying enough attention. We still need to decolonise African Governments!

I want my followers to understand that you SHOULDN’T insult South Africa as a country based on a few loud voices on social media who express racist or xenophobic views. South Africa has provided numerous opportunities to the world, particularly to Africans. If South Africans were truly xenophobic, Africans would not be living there in such large numbers today. The majority of South Africans are welcoming to all foreigners who are legally in the country and do not commit crimes. These foreigners work with South Africans, live with them, and many are married to South Africans. There is nothing to worry about in South Africa if you are there legally and not committing crimes. South African citizens have the right to express concerns about illegal foreign nationals and those who commit crimes. In Zimbabwe, illegal foreigners are often placed in dilapidated jails, and refugees are housed in camps like Tongogara in Manicaland. Generalisations are dangerous, especially when they taint and insult a silent majority that is not xenophobic. Local communities in South Africa have protected foreign nationals from a small, violent minority on many occasions. The South African government is not xenophobic either. If it were, Zimbabwean women, who make up 70% of pregnant women giving birth at Musina Hospital in Limpopo, would not be allowed there. We should be grateful for the South African hospitality we have received for decades. It is important to recognise that while xenophobia and racism may exist in certain pockets of society, these attitudes do not reflect the majority of South Africans or the country as a whole. Respecting the rights of South African citizens to voice concerns about illegal immigration and crime is important, as these are valid issues. However, it is equally important to avoid generalising these concerns to portray the entire nation as xenophobic or unwelcoming. If South Africans were truly xenophobic, parties like PA and Action SA would be in power today. The four largest political parties in South Africa have never used xenophobia as a campaign platform, which should be telling. Do not judge a nation's character based on a few loud, yet inconsequential voices on social media. They do not represent South Africa accurately. Countries are a product of their history. We shouldn’t draw comparisons with where we come from and insist that our hosts should behave as we do. If South Africans were to follow our practices in Zimbabwe, refugees would be in camps and illegal foreigners would be in jail! In Zimbabwe, refugees are not even allowed to work, if you are found working, you are thrown into jail. South Africa, on the other hand, provides equal legal rights in its courts to foreigners as it does to South Africans. These actions are not those of a xenophobic country. Zimbabwe has refused to issue documents to people of Malawian and Zimbabwean origin, and it has revoked the citizenships of many Zimbabweans whose great-grandparents came from elsewhere. In any society, you are going to have opportunistic politicians and unemployables who think that all their problems are caused by foreigners, we have them everywhere, but they shouldn’t be used to define a whole nation!

The question for us as the African continent is how do we deal with that. We must deal with the root cause of this, where people leave their country’s en masse. It is not only African people, we have European and Asian people coming into our country. We must ask ourselves how did they go through the countries of departure without the correct papers. This is a global crisis, that requires government to formulate a response to this. What we can’t allow is for our country to be described as a xenophobic country. The question for us as the African continent is how do we deal with that. We must deal with the root cause of this, where people leave their country’s en masse. It is not only African people, we have European and Asian people coming into our country. We must ask ourselves how did they go through the countries of departure without the correct papers. This is a global crisis, that requires government to formulate a response to this. What we can’t allow is for our country to be described as a xenophobic country. Please help me understand something. I still do not understand why Africans should mobilise themselves to support a South American team over an African team, South Africa. The fact that there have been xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa by a minority of South Africans against fellow Africans does not necessarily mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Emotional reactions rarely produce meaningful solutions. In moments like these, I believe it is important to reflect and ask ourselves, what would Julius Nyerere have said? Would Nyerere have responded to Afrophobia by supporting Mexico against an African team? What would Kwame Nkrumah have said? More importantly, what would Nelson Mandela have said? It is important to understand that when someone does something wrong, and you respond by doing something similar, you risk becoming what you are criticising. But when someone mistreats you and you respond with maturity, principle and love, you break the cycle of toxicity. People can then clearly see the difference between the two of you. If you choose to fight a pig in the mud, both of you end up covered in mud, and from a distance it becomes difficult to tell the difference. Sometimes the most powerful response is not retaliation, but demonstrating the values you wish others would embrace. These are simply my reflections. People are free to support whichever team they want. However, choosing a team solely because of the xenophobic and Afrophobic actions of a minority group in South Africa, and then treating the entire South African nation as if it is united with that minority, does not strike me as the best path towards African unity. If we truly believe in Pan-Africanism, then we must be careful not to judge millions of people by the actions of a few. Otherwise, we risk reinforcing the very divisions that we claim to oppose. And to my African brothers and sisters who have large social media platforms and are followed by millions of people across different media platforms, as I am, we have a responsibility to be measured in what we say. We must use our influence to guide people towards solutions rather than inflame the very problems we claim to be trying to solve. Leadership is not about amplifying anger, resentment or division. It is about encouraging reflection, dialogue and understanding. Our words carry weight, and with that influence comes a duty to build bridges, not burn them. If we genuinely want a more united Africa, then we must be careful not to deepen existing wounds for applause or engagement. We should be helping people find common ground and practical solutions rather than accentuating the very challenges we are trying to overcome.

I don't buy that the social media age ban is about child safety at all. It is about verifying everyone's ID to get on social media, and it is about removing young people's right to engage in the conversation online. It is the thin end of a very nasty wedge. The start of an Australian digital prison... an online penal colony. I will not be calm. We must push back.
