Brain cells (neurons) communicate primarily through a process called synaptic transmission, which involves both electrical and chemical signals. When a neuron is activated, it generates an electrical impulse known as an action potential that travels down its axon to the axon terminals. Upon reaching the terminal, the action potential triggers the release of neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers stored in vesicles. These neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft (the small gap between neurons) and bind to specific receptors on the surface of the adjacent neuron (the postsynaptic neuron). This binding can either excite the postsynaptic neuron, making it more likely to fire its own action potential or inhibit it, reducing the likelihood of firing. This enables the brain to process information, form memories, and coordinate responses.

Yeah, kinda! There are second, third, fourth, fifth messengers...and there is a "lasso" attached to calcium channels that push the vesicles toward the membrane. And the vesicles themselves have receptors. And there is reuptake and sometimes retrograde influence...
