“I think the world must realize that China will not converge with Western norms, and it will find its own path to modernity,” Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in a recent interview with the Financial Times, noting that China is a technological leader in many areas, in advanced manufacturing, in renewable energy, and the world has to contend with and accept the reality that China is not just a rising power, it is a risen power. China recently decided to forgo its special and differential treatment provisions in the WTO. In just this past year or so, it has doubled down on its support for global institutions. These are examples of how we have to embrace the reality that China will be a key player, and potentially a key leader, in this new global system, said Wong.
