The aircraft was carrying a mixed crew of military personnel, government civilians, and contractors on a radar test mission when it crashed shortly after takeoff. From a test pilot perspective, the crew size is notable. A normal operational B-52H crew is five, but there were eight personnel aboard, which strongly suggests this was a developmental test sortie with additional flight-test engineers, contractors, or instrumentation specialists riding along. Ground footage shows the main landing gear coming off the runway with a cloud of dust behind it. There are reports that the aircraft may have struck equipment beyond the runway, potentially damaging runway lights and possibly the aircraft itself, though the reports aren't verified yet. After takeoff, the crew stopped the climb at around 9,000 ft and entered a holding pattern near Munich, likely to assess the situation and burn fuel.
