This actually happened. 2022. California Governor Gavin Newsom announces that California has the biggest state budget surplus in American history. Newsom: "No other state in American history has ever experienced a surplus as large as this." Gavin proposed returning some of the money to the people. With everything being so unaffordable in California, people were happy to be getting a few dollars back from the state. The only problem? It was all a lie. The $97.5 billion surplus was a four year projection that Newsom's people based on faulty revenue assumptions. In 2024 Newsom's team quietly put out a revision that said the 2022 projection of a $97.5 billion surplus was off by $165 billion. The biggest surplus in American history was actually a massive deficit. Absolutely on par for Gavin Newsom.
