There is a mistake in foundation reinforcement .

Retaining wall is one of the most structural elements that failed when wrongly design. Design against earth pressure.

They don't if you make them like that.

the dirt sit on the L shape slab and become part of the foundation. its weight push the wall harder against the ground, friction do the rest. brilliant if you think about it

retaining walls with proper drainage and reinforcement hold that weight easy

Proper drainage behind the wall is critical to relieve hydrostatic pressure, which is often the true cause of structural failure.

Retaining walls holding back literal TONS of dirt like it’s nothing It’s not magic — it’s physics + smart engineering. Angle of repose + compacted soil + hidden drainage gravel = dirt stays locked in place. One wrong angle and it becomes a dirt avalanche Civil engineers quietly carrying the world.

If you mean things like sand dunes, dirt piles, or even soil embankments, the key idea is physics + structure. Loose dirt can surprisingly hold its shape because of friction between particles. Each grain of sand or soil rubs against the others, creating resistance that keeps the pile from collapsing immediately. A few factors decide how stable it is: Angle of repose: Every material has a natural steepest angle it can sit at without sliding. For dry sand, it’s usually around 30–35°. Moisture: A little water can actually help (it creates “stickiness”), but too much makes it collapse into mud. Compaction: Packed soil is much more stable than loose soil because particles lock together. Support/base shape: Wider bases and gradual slopes are more stable than steep walls.
