If you mean things like sand dunes, dirt piles, or even soil embankments, the key idea is physics + structure. Loose dirt can surprisingly hold its shape because of friction between particles. Each grain of sand or soil rubs against the others, creating resistance that keeps the pile from collapsing immediately. A few factors decide how stable it is: Angle of repose: Every material has a natural steepest angle it can sit at without sliding. For dry sand, it’s usually around 30–35°. Moisture: A little water can actually help (it creates “stickiness”), but too much makes it collapse into mud. Compaction: Packed soil is much more stable than loose soil because particles lock together. Support/base shape: Wider bases and gradual slopes are more stable than steep walls.
