The secret is a tiny sensing hole near the nozzle tip. As fuel rises inside the vehicle's tank, it covers this hole and changes the air pressure in the nozzle's sensing system. This triggers a diaphragm and automatically shuts off the fuel flow.

A fuel nozzle is a device that delivers fuel to an engine or combustion chamber. It controls the flow and atomization of fuel, ensuring proper mixing with air for efficient combustion. The nozzle may have features like swirlers or injectors to enhance fuel distribution and optimize performance.

The automatic shut off for fuel nozzles was inspired by a toilet flush sound. In 1939 Richard C. Corson created an early version after hearing one so that workers could fill multiple gasoline barrels simultaneously without constant supervision.
