How does NASA plan to use resources on the surface of the Moon? One method is the ISRU Pilot Excavator, or IPEx! Designed by Kennedy’s Swamp Works team, the primary goal of IPEx is to dig up lunar soil, known as regolith, and transport it across the Moon’s surface.

We have awarded Astrolab with a lunar terrain vehicle award. Their Crewed Lunar Vehicle is a rover designed to transport astronauts and supplies across the lunar surface. This vehicle will be deployed to the Moon by 2028 through our commercial lunar payload services initiative.

We have a few more integrated #BlueGhost payloads to show before we ship for environmental testing! Next up is the Lunar PlanetVac (LPV) developed by Honeybee Robotics, a Blue Origin Company. LPV will deploy to the Moon’s surface and demonstrate pneumatic sample collection of lunar regolith by collecting and sorting regolith within its sample collection chamber.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says the primary objective of the Artemis II’s trip around the moon is “to gather data from the ECLSS system, the life support system on the Orion spacecraft,” which will be used in future missions. “Learning as much as we can about Orion is critically important because Artemis III is a year away,” he says. “That's where we're going to test the same spacecraft with our lunar landers. Followed up in 2028 by Artemis IV, where we're going to use this spacecraft, transfer crew to the landers, and put American astronauts back on the surface of the moon.”
