Wonder what puts the “super” in supermassive black holes? Check out this animation that compares the sizes of 10 supersized black holes in our universe, including Sagittarius A* in our Milky Way ... which isn't even close to the biggest! We’ve included our solar system for scale, so you can see how big these black holes are! But this doesn’t represent their real locations — nearly all of these black holes are in other galaxies far, far away. #BlackHoleWeek

This is going to make you feel very small. Fly away from the surface of Earth, past the Sun, out of the Solar System, through the closest stars, leave the Milky Way, to the cosmic web of galaxies in the nearby Universe.

Here is how the merger of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies would appear to an observer on Earth! An artist's impression 🌀 When the collision begins (in approximately 4.5 billion years), we will see the nearby Andromeda galaxy looking much like the band of the Milky Way. Gradually, their brightness will increase due to the interaction of nebulae, the birth of bright, massive stars, and supernova explosions.

Galaxies merging 🌌 A supercomputer simulation shows many galaxies merging over time. The parts of galaxies we can see are glowing stars forming from gas in their central parts. Visualizations like these inform researchers on a galaxy’s evolution and how gas within one may form.
