Column cover pulled = Theft recovery that was Hotwired? Or a mouse/rat chewed the wiring harness and power is bypassing the fuse block and jumping straight to the fuel pump and ignition system. Pretty common for a car to run w/o the battery connected. Battery is to start the car, alternator powers everything once it is running.

Shorted wiring harness, shorts from 12v+ to ignition and fuel pump supply, alternator is keeping it running.

Gmt 800. Best trucks ever. Probably a 5.3l.

Oh there has to be a short somewhere with the fuel pump because you technically don't need a battery to run a car You just need the battery to start it the ignition column could be broken and why you're able to pull the key out and keep it running but the fuel pumps the real question

I'm admittedly not a car guy so take it easy. Once started that car can run on alternator alone or no?
