In a significant species revival effort,Tamil Nadu records a steady rise in Vulture numbers. From the brink of extinction, Vultures species are soaring high once again thanks to conservation efforts. Synchronized vulture survey of 2025 in Tamil Nadu shows increasing trend in vulture populations, particularly for White-rumped Vultures and Long-billed Vultures classified by IUCN as critically endangered. We also observed a new record of sorts with the first-ever nesting of a Red-headed Vulture in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The survey covered 106 vantage points in key protected areas, including Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, and Nellai Wildlife Sanctuary. Here are the important findings; 1. Total Vulture Count: 157 vultures recorded in Tamil Nadu (100 in 2022-23 and 152 in 2023-24 ) 2. The vulture population in the landscape shows an increase from 320 to 390 ( TN, Kerala,Karnataka) 2. Most Abundant Species: White-rumped Vulture (110) followed by Long-billed Vulture (31) Red-headed Vulture (11) Egyptian Vulture (05) 3. Nesting Trends: highest number of nests was recorded in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, indicating successful breeding. The study emphasizes continued conservation efforts, including monitoring nesting sites, assessing human-vulture interactions, and deploying camera traps for better population estimation. The game changer was effective implementation of ban on Diclofenac a Veterinary drug causing large scale death of vultures and setting up the vulture conservation committee. TN has taken the lead in effective enforcement of violations. 104 cases were initiated leading to conviction. The recent ban on Nimusulide is also being pursued wherein action in 10 cases has been initiated leading to suspension of 5 licenses of Pharmacy shops for violations. #WATCH | Gariyaband, Chhattisgarh | A new tigress has been spotted in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve, captured by trap cameras set up as part of the All India Tiger Census 2026. Reportedly, after sending the tigress's photographs to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for verification, it was found that there was no record of her before, meaning this tigress is being included as a new tiger in the country's tiger census. In a meticulously planned operation, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department relocated a wild tusker from O’Valley in the Gudalur region of the Nilgiris, a hotspot of recurring human elephant conflict. After weeks of monitoring and rehabilitation, the elephant was translocated somewhere in the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, a pristine habitat ideal for elephants. Led by the Chief Wildlife Warden along with Conservators, DFOs, veterinarians, ground staff and trained kumkis, the operation showcased precision, coordination across divisions, patience and professionalism. It ensured both human safety and wildlife conservation. Maharashtra’s Mission for Tiger Conservation and Environmental Sustainability Glad to be present at the event organised on the occasion of 'International Tiger Day 2026' in Nagpur today. For more than 30 years, tiger conservation has been one of our highest priorities. Tigers are found in only 13 countries and India is home to nearly 75% of the world's tiger population. Maharashtra has also done exceedingly well in tiger conservation and is home to 444 tigers across 6 tiger reserves today. This success is the result of continuous efforts by the government in protecting natural habitats, adopting scientific conservation practices and working closely with local communities. With our five-point conservation strategy and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, Maharashtra will continue to strengthen its conservation work and soon emerge as the leading state in tiger conservation. Congratulations to the Forest Department for its dedicated efforts. If forests could speak, Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu would tell one of India’s greatest conservation stories. Most people do not fully appreciate the true value of protected areas. We must know the value of sheer abundance of life they sustain. Anamalai Tiger Reserve is India's 28th Tiger Reserve spread in nearly 1,480 sq. km. It shelters an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, including 88 species of mammals, 320 species of birds, 157 species of reptiles, 112 species of amphibians and 146 species of orchids. It is also home to some of the Western Ghats’ most iconic endemic species, including the Nilgiri Tahr, Nilgiri Marten, Nilgiri Langur and Malabar Giant Squirrel, as well as stunning birds such as the Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Palani Laughing Thrush, Malabar Starling, Legge's Hawk Eagle & Great Hornbills. Together with WWF (World Wildlife Fund), we create a unique sand sculpture every year to raise global tiger awareness on Global Tiger Day. This year too we have done it. WWF India is creating awareness about the securing the home and vicinity of tiger. 🚨 Excellent News 🚨 A wild Amur Tigress has been filmed with five cubs in tow in the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park. “It's the first time that a mother with five cubs has ever been filmed in China,” said Stuart Chapman, Leader of WWF’s global Tiger program, Tigers Alive. “China’s commitment to Tiger conservation is delivering incredible results and creating a bright future for these magnificent cats.” The Amur Tigress is thought to be around nine years old, and her cubs between six to eight months old. Their debut comes at a critical time for Amur Tigers as recent estimates suggest their numbers are climbing following an all-time low of just 20 individuals in 2010.
