In a significant species revival effort,Tamil Nadu records a steady rise in Vulture numbers. From the brink of extinction, Vultures species are soaring high once again thanks to conservation efforts. Synchronized vulture survey of 2025 in Tamil Nadu shows increasing trend in vulture populations, particularly for White-rumped Vultures and Long-billed Vultures classified by IUCN as critically endangered. We also observed a new record of sorts with the first-ever nesting of a Red-headed Vulture in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The survey covered 106 vantage points in key protected areas, including Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, and Nellai Wildlife Sanctuary. Here are the important findings; 1. Total Vulture Count: 157 vultures recorded in Tamil Nadu (100 in 2022-23 and 152 in 2023-24 ) 2. The vulture population in the landscape shows an increase from 320 to 390 ( TN, Kerala,Karnataka) 2. Most Abundant Species: White-rumped Vulture (110) followed by Long-billed Vulture (31) Red-headed Vulture (11) Egyptian Vulture (05) 3. Nesting Trends: highest number of nests was recorded in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, indicating successful breeding. The study emphasizes continued conservation efforts, including monitoring nesting sites, assessing human-vulture interactions, and deploying camera traps for better population estimation. The game changer was effective implementation of ban on Diclofenac a Veterinary drug causing large scale death of vultures and setting up the vulture conservation committee. TN has taken the lead in effective enforcement of violations. 104 cases were initiated leading to conviction. The recent ban on Nimusulide is also being pursued wherein action in 10 cases has been initiated leading to suspension of 5 licenses of Pharmacy shops for violations. Built at a cost of Rs 16.04 Crores, the Centre will serve as a dedicated hub for habitat protection, population estimation & conservation action including walking trails. The moment is especially meaningful as it builds on the landmark step taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2022, when India’s first Slender Loris Conservation Reserve was notified at Kadavur to an extent of 11,800 Ha in Karur and Dindigul Districts.
