The Tempest Prognosticator, invented by George Merryweather in 1850, used 12 leeches in rainwater-filled bottles. As storms approached and air pressure dropped, leeches climbed tubes, triggering whalebone mechanisms to ring a central bell. More rings indicated a stronger storm. It was displayed at the 1851 Great Exhibition but wasn't widely adopted. Fascinating Victorian tech!

The Tempest Prognosticator, also known as the leech barometer, was invented by British doctor George Merryweather in 1850. It used leeches' sensitivity to atmospheric changes to predict storms.

That’s great technology to set such alarm

When a storm approached, the leeches became agitated, climbed out of the water, and triggered hammers that rang the bell.
