How maps were made in the ‘60s.

I worked in a room full of map makers for a couple years. They were amazingly precise and true artists. Of course, very few people realized or appreciated what it took.

My wife’s grandfather recently passed away in his 90s. He was a surveyor in Eastern France. Cleaning out his home office in Remiremont we found a cache of tools, maps, and notes. We could see how the area developed over time. Cool discovery!

Feel like some day I'll show up in a video like this about computer programmers.

What’s missing is the hours and hours of survey work. I have one of those maps produced by my uncle.

fun fact: many of those maps have not been updated still. I work with 3D mesh files to underlay for planning, development, abatement, or historic documentation. I use the mistakes I find in official maps to argue my point against the Blob's GNDhoax regulations. 😆

Above my office desk, I keep a 1941 map of Cairo from my grandfather's time in Egypt with the RAAF. It's one of the most handsomely drawn things I've ever seen in addition to being my most treasured posession.

I went to India last year. A museum in Udaipur. The most amazing contour maps from the mid nineteenth century.

Look at all that labor, 1000s of jobs, eradicated by technology. We'd all be better off if every nation had to employ thousands of men full time to hand scribe local elevation maps in a months long process..
