To be fair, I'm a Floridian. I work and play outside, and we have hookworms. It starts as creeping eruption, then they get in your lungs, then your stomach. Usually, I stop it at creeping eruption, but there was one time I didn't get rid of them fast enough.

I went to vet school in New Zealand. Dewormer in every pharmacy. Common to randomly deworm yourself every once in a while. We recommend annual parasite testing for our pets and parasite prevention? Why do we never do it for ourselves? Questions to ponder.
