How Porcupine Needles Work 😮

These quills are coated with sharp, barbed tips that allow them to easily embed into the skin of attackers but are difficult to remove. The barbs on the quills latch onto tissue, making it painful and challenging for a predator to pull them out. When a porcupine feels threatened, it raises its quills and may even swat its tail to dislodge them. Upon contact, the quills penetrate the skin and are often left behind, causing pain, inflammation, and potential infection. Some quills can even break off, further complicating removal. The quills are made of keratin, the same material found in human hair and nails, and are designed to be lightweight but tough. Though generally non-lethal, quill penetration can lead to serious infections or injuries if left untreated.

Those needles can also potentially cause less tissue damage as well than standard needles, and was being mentioned as a potential option for first aid treatment in war zones back in 2017 or so. It’s neat stuff.
