A very simple, but excellent clip here of Man City practicing Sub-Principles (Defensive Line Principles) from their Game Model. Not everything has to reinvent the wheel. Notice the full back looking down the line to adjust its height. Look at the age-old principles of play: pressure, cover and balance. Observe advancing and retreating as a line (protecting the space in front or protecting the space behind) to avoid gaps in between line or between players in lines. Identical to the #KingKnightEd sub-principles for the Defensive Line.

Why 4-3-3 WON’T WORK for United during AFCON 🔴 AFCON hasn’t started yet, but the problem is already clear. Motherwell In Possession I've been so impressed by Motherwell's performance and style this season. After watching back their 5-0 win from Saturday, I noticed a few key themes/principles of their play in possession: • Principle 1 - attackers occupy the spaces between FBs & CBs. This keeps opposition FBs pinned back and allows for moments to exploit opposition miscommunication. • Principle 2 - the "tapered box" in deep build-up: 2 CBs with wide positioning; 2 CMs with narrow positioning. Allows M'Well to comfortably progress the ball forward using diagonal & bounce passes. Attracts pressure from St Mirren, creating lots of space between defence & midfield to exploit. • Principle 3 - the use of 1-touch play to change the tempo. 1-touch passing disoriented St Mirren at times and didn't allow them to get appropriate pressure on the ball. It was also evident, especially on the left, that only 1 player needs to hold width (Longelo), Slattery was given a licence to roam inside and create overloads in the midfield, making it difficult for the St Mirren midfield. I genuinely believe if they had a proper goalscorer in the 1st part of the season M'well would have been top of the league as they have consistently been the best side.

$Just watched some in-possession bits from Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough, and although plenty of great accounts on here have already broken down how they set up with the ball, I thought I’d also share a few thoughts of my own. There’s been a lot of talk about their structure and the methodical, sometimes slow, nature of their build-up, and I largely agree with that. It isn’t rigid; players aren’t locked into zones at all times, but there is a clear recurring picture. The left back holding width, the right back tucking inside, the 3-2 base in build up. That structure is very evident, but I'm not going to talk about that. What really caught my eye was the intention to change rhythms across all three thirds. The slow circulation mentioned can very quickly turn into sharp vertical play or quick combinations, often without warning. The centre backs, along with one of the central midfielders, seem key to this in deeper areas. They are often the ones responsible for accelerating the game during a passing sequence, whether through sudden carries, changes of direction, switches of play, or simply finding a brave pass through the press. In the middle third, the use of a staggered midfield and central overloads allows players to operate on diagonal angles to find and link passes, and when you add the constant movement from the wingers and the attacking midfielder, it regularly sets the stage for UBTs or third man combos\runs, creates the conditions for these tempo shifts. In the final third, similar principles apply, especially in wide areas where triangles are formed to facilitate combinations. Wingers and fullbacks are clearly encouraged to take on their man in 1v1s, and pass and move sequences are used to increase the tempo. While a lot of this play happens out wide, targeting central zones through diagonals or cut backs is also a recurring feature. On the downside, and although I felt the players always seem to be on the lookout for opportunities to increase the tempo during these passing sequences, it sometimes feels like they wait a bit too long before executing a quick action. That hesitation is, in my opinion, what gave their build-up its “slow” reputation.$

Tactical Report [1st half]: Nkosingiphile “Mshini” Ngcobo📝 Role: Central Midfielder / Controller Observations: Tempo Management: Mshini effectively dictated the pace of the game, controlling transitions and ensuring the team played to his rhythm. Positional Awareness: Maintained excellent spatial awareness, constantly scanning surroundings to anticipate opposition movements and adjust positioning. Passing & Distribution: He showed composure in possession; consistently found forward passing options without forcing risky balls. Created and exploited passing lanes to connect with the likes of Shabalala and Ighodaro across all areas. Combination Play: The understanding with Ox was particularly effective; they maintained optimal distances to facilitate fluid build-up and maintain team structure. It's not perfect, but they give the team improved quality together. Defensive Contribution: Showed high commitment out of possession, applied intelligent pressure, closed passing lanes, and maintained positional awareness. Even after Ox was removed, he was the pivot who used the ball to manage the game and supported the build-up. Impact on Team Play: Provided stability in midfield, controlled transitions, and allowed other players the freedom to operate with confidence. To avoid exposing technical deficiencies in our double pivot, Mshini did not push too high too often, maintaining good distance from Ox. Mshini functioned as the fulcrum of midfield control. One of the most interesting build up concepts we saw last season came from Elche in Spain. 🇪🇸 From both goal kicks and open play, Elche manipulated the positioning of their first line to create space for the centre backs to step forward, both with and without the ball. Rather than simply circulating possession across the back line, the objective was to provoke pressure, identify the free centre back and create opportunities for them to carry the ball forward or step beyond the opposition’s first line. A sneak peek from an analysis thread that will be dropping later. Wednesday's second goal - not appreciated for the move and the play. 20 passes, patient, controlled play. A look at the freezes 1: shows our change of shape in the second half - looking much more like Wednesday of the last 18 months. 433 build up, rotation with Svante moving out to false full back with Lowe going high and Kobacki coming in and looking for space between the lines with Lowe. 2: After patient play, Svante picks it up at false left back, Koback holding space between the lines - this is a key change from the first half - 3: rotation between Kobacki and Lowe, with Lowe now holding the space in the box - between the lines. You then see a ladder movement pattern between Baz, Kobacki and Lowe - runs from the ladder with the lay off into space. 4: Picking up Cadz for the finish. He knows the space he is going to attack, as he attacked the same space to disrupt for the first goal. But timing is key, he has to come onto the ball to finish on one touch, so holding that initial position is key. 5: Cadz holds to see the weight of the pass into McNeill, as he can play the cross first time, Cadz starts the move across as the defenders drop, picking up the yard between the lines A great goal from a side who have spent no money, have about 10 fit senior players, have had little pre season, dont regularly get paid, and, apart from 3 of them, none of which were first team starters at the end of last season. I think Henrik was a little guilty of going too defensive and rigid in the first 2.5 games, but these players can play, and the youth, McNeill, Cadz, Kobacki, need to be given the freedom to play rather than being shackled in a rigid system.
