How special effects were made before the heavy use of CGI

i miss this kind of thing it was so innovative.

This is like 50 years before CGI. Look at Star Wars (OT) or Star Trek for how special effects were made right before CGI, it's quite different than this I think. Manipulation of the film itself to essentially get a green screen before digital green screening was a thing for example.

Human ingenuity never ceases to amaze me.

For those who do not know that is Karel Zeman. Czechoslovak Director if many films where he used simple but genius practical effects with stop motion animation.
