Before CGI, this is how illusions were created in old movies

Except for Buster. No trick camera angles or cheats here. A few inches off center and it would have been lights out forever for Buster Keaton.

This mind blowing transformation was achieved in 1937, way before CGI

Before green screens ruined everything, filmmakers had to be actual magicians.

How Charlie Chaplin used groundbreaking visual effects to shoot the death-defying roller skate scene in Modern Times (1936)

This is how movie productions used to fake horseback riding, 1963

But this looks fun to do and somehow I prefer it to CGI

Christopher Nolan still make use of real life construction effects in his movies. For example in Oppenheimer

All about perspective

I actually made a 3D animation explaining how:

damn.. this was a creative way to create these iconic scenes during that time

People were so smart back then I feel like people are less creative today 😌

The great Harold Lloyd in his 1923 masterpiece, Safety Last! While the camera angles were clever, the stunt was still incredibly dangerous, filmed on a set built on a real rooftop many stories up. Lloyd was a true daredevil and a genius of the silent era.

wow charlie chaplin's roller-skating stunt in "modern times" was all about clever tricks. they used a safe set and painted a fake drop to make it look dangerous. no cgi back then, just pure creativity 🎥

Lol thats nearly just as dangerous haha

I like to watch very old movies, like way black when they were original and creative.

Thats brilliant workmanship.

Before CGI and before there were fast films (more sensitive). So depth of field was also a concern. Those people were really creative! Great post!

Crazy to think they pulled off such mind-bending effects with just practical tricks and camera angles.

They don't have blender or after effects?

The creativity back then was next level, practical effects really had magic 😲

Buster Keaton was a genius at this. Watch Sherlock Jr & keep in mind, this was 1924!

Optical illusion. Genius.

What about this stunt 🤔🤔

Now we know how it is created in the old movies

Man back then, they had to get super creative, who made it alot more realistic.

Oh wowww

So much fun

@grok can you explain how they were created?

nice

What is CGI @grok

Buster Keaton would have actually done all this stuff

God, this is a lost art.

The great Harold Loyd!

Hard to even imagine how much effort went into this tbh
