The Lord of the Rings trilogy changed cinema forever, and much of it happened behind the scenes. Peter Jackson took a massive gamble by shooting all three films at once. The cast later returned for reshoots, shaping the trilogy into the epic we know today. Back in the day, Stargate accomplished a lot on what, at the time, was a pretty modest budget. A big part of our success was thanks to our in-house visual effects team led by VFX Supervisor Mark Savela. Check out this EVA chasm jump sequence from Stargate: Atlantis's "Adrift" featuring Sheppard and Zelenka. It was shot in what we coined, appropriately enough, the VFX stage - home to the village set, some Atlantis interiors, and the hive ship.

Cotton plant lookalikes were used on set to ground Omar Benson Miller’s performance in tangible authenticity like his sharecropper grandfather experienced, while more than three million VFX plants were integrated to extend the landscape into a vast horizon. This carefully calibrated balance between physical and digital artistry not only achieved cinematic breadth, but also honors the lived experiences and personal histories that both Miller and Director/Writer/Producer Ryan Coogler brought to the narrative. The most prominent example of a film that was financially viable because of generative AI was “Here” by Robert Zemeckis. Starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, it shows a couple living through multiple decades. The film’s budget was ~$50m and wouldn’t be able to cover traditional process for de-aging: ▫️Make-up: Takes hour to put on and can make actors look 10 years younger (but not 50 as the film requires) ▫️CGI: Expensive and long (per NYT, “Persuading us that we’re watching Hanks and Wright in their 20s would have required hundreds of VFX artists, tens of millions of dollars and months of postproduction work.”) Zemeckis says “Here” was able to be made in 2024 but not in 2021 (due to CGI costs). Also by using generative AI, Hanks and Wright could act more naturally without thick make-up (or those CGI dots) on their face. The AI effects were done by Metaphysics (the company’s content head is Ed Ulbrich, the former CEO of Digital Domain, James Cameron’s FX firm). Metaphysics AI tools were particularly useful because of how much video and images there are of Hanks and Wright over the decades (won’t be the case for all actors). Dune II, developed by Westwood Studios and released in 1992, was a true turning point for the real-time strategy genre. It's hard to overstate just how much it shaped and popularized RTS games as we know them. While a few titles had come before, Dune II blew the doors wide open with its depth, smooth gameplay, excellent graphics, cinematic cutscenes, three fully playable factions, and digitized voice acting. It was an absolute standout and unforgettable gem that hooked players like few others. Looking back, micromanaging every unit feels clunky by modern standards, but at the time it never once bothered me. You don’t miss conveniences you’ve never known. For 1992, the visuals were stunning for a strategy title, the cutscenes carried that classic Cinemaware flair, and the brilliant music paired with spoken dialogue made you feel genuinely immersed in the Dune universe. I began with House Atreides, like most people, but it didn’t take long before I (and pretty much everyone else) drifted over to the “dark side,” diving into the campaigns for Harkonnens and the Ordos. That Harkonnen Devastator was just ridiculously cool - such an epic unit name and design. Dune 2000 came out years later, but I never saw it as a proper successor. A genuine Dune III, done right? Now that would be an absolute dream and I have no idea why it was never attempted.

It's no secret that Michael Bay likes to shoot his films with as much practical effects as possible. In #Transformers (2007) there is a shot where Optimus Prime and Megatron crash through a building, this shot was done practically using a miniature at 1/4 scale by ILM. Doing this shot practically allowed them to get the randomness of the destruction without having to do expensive simulations. The CG robots were then added into the shot to merge the photographic plate with the CG elements. When doing live-action films, it is always a good idea to shoot physically as much as possible. This provides the VFX artists with real world reference to ground their work in and allows them to compliment the shot with CG elements. One of the reasons the original Transformers trilogy looks so good is because of the incredible blend of practical and digital effects. It is difficult to watch the film and spot what is real and what is CG. ILM VFX Supervisor Scott Farrar talks through how this scene was pulled off:
