Water simulation has always been the holy grail of FX, requiring an incredible amount of computation to get right. For Battleship (2012), ILM had to reinvent their water systems to allow them to be able to deliver the show with it's plethora of shots in water. The alien ships are hundreds of feet long and therefore displace massive amounts of water. This, coupled with them making aggressive movements meant that hundreds of millions of droplets of water had to be simulated per shot to get a believable look of water interaction. Before their new water systems, artists were only able to get "1-2 simulations done per day", but with the new system they were able to "do many simulations per day", increasing the iterations and therefore the creative freedom and expression for the artists. ILM has since reworked their water systems multiple times, now being more powerful and accurate than ever, utilizing more powerful hardware and more accurate and efficient simulation algorithms. Today, water simulation is something that can be done a lot easier than before, even being able to do it in real-time with tools such as Unreal Engine and LiquiGen. I've compiled some performance tips gleaned from working on my 1 million GPU AI steering agents project. I want to see Twitter compression destroy this video. 🚀 GPGPU: N-Body - O(n^2) - simulations are easily processed in parallel. GPUs are really good at parallel processing = 🫶. 🌐 Spatial hashing: Accelerate local group search via sorting into an unbounded grid (int3 cell -> 1D hash/array index). ⏩ Asynchronous compute: Once the data is on the GPU, both the simulation and rendering are handled there. There's no need to synchronize the physics step to visual update frames with decoupled rendering (see below). 🔄 Batched/staggered update cycle: Spread updates over multiple dispatches/frames. 🎭 Decoupled simulation-rendering: Simulation step can be much lower than visual updates. Use interpolation and/or simple velocity integration. In my case I'm passing the smoothed-out position and velocity of the boid 'particles' to VFX Graph for rendering. With these techniques you can get 100,000 boids even mobile/smartphones. 📱 Please don't mind the emojis, I like to flavour and stylize my text. #gamedev #indiedev

"Every former Nvidia employee that goes to a large tech company like Google and MSFT says it's extremely difficult to adjust to the culture, Nvidia is faster but the work ethic is on a different level" 3dfx was the No 1 graphics company in the mid-to-late 90s, their main competitor Nvidia beat them and essentially destroyed them - acquired their assets and hired 100 of their engineers. The 3dfx engineers kept looking for Nvidia's secret or magic trick, but it turned out the only secret was relentless execution & working crazy hard. This culture obviously stems from the CEO, Jensen - who loves to work on Sunday nights & finds it relaxing. Jensen is constantly focused on cultivating talent - he rewards highly performing engineers by doubling or tripling their stock compensation. To avoid the internal politics that plague large organizations (where projects get stuck in quicksand needing multiple approvals), Jensen made the organization flat. Every time they need to make decisions, he brings together top 10-15 people, including lower-level employees, to hash out the main problems in an intellectually honest way and execute quickly - what they call "speed of light" at Nvidia.
