I’m praying for a successful re-entry! This mission is risky and should have stayed unmanned. Artemis I already had a heatshield failure (even though the lander was fine), yet NASA’s “fix” is a steeper, hotter entry profile that’s completely unproven. What if the faster path cracks the shield even worse than last time? @SpaceX and @elonmusk are constantly hammered for high-risk unmanned stuff, due to their rapid development. And yet here NASA is rolling the dice with a crew on the line and everyone but me are silent. Smarter people than me are involved and it’ll probably be okay… but the whole point of Artemis I was to prove the hardware unmanned — and it failed. So why not run one more unmanned test before putting astronauts on board? It’s not like the landing hardware is anywhere close to ready (SpaceX and Blue Origin still have to deliver), so another flight would only cost time — and time isn’t even NASA’s to control right now anyway. Quick reminder Artemis I used a “skip” maneuver. The Avcoat shield charred and released gases on the first dip. When it bounced back into space, the outside cooled and stopped ablating, trapping super-hot gas inside. That pressure cracked the shield and blew chunks off in over 100 spots. The “milder” heating actually slowed the protective char layer while still generating gas — the worst possible combo.Artemis II’s steeper “loft-type” trajectory skips the skip entirely: higher peak temps but much shorter duration so the pressure can’t build up. Bold plan… but it’s still a gamble with people on board. Fingers crossed it works. 🚀

Not to mention, it must survive a Skip Re-Entry. Orion's re-entry sets it apart from anything NASA has flown with crew before. 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐩 𝐑𝐞-𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 Orion doesn't go straight down into the atmosphere like Apollo did. Instead, it skips back up. Think of it like skipping a rock across a pond. The capsule goes into the upper atmosphere, slows down a little, then rises back up for a short time above the denser layers before going back down for the last time.

The Artemis II heat shield protects the crew during their 25,000 mph reentry by using a process called ablation. The 16.5-foot shield is covered in a material called Avcoat, which is designed to intentionally char and erode, carrying 5,000°F heat away from the capsule as it vaporizes. Following "unexpected" chipping during the uncrewed Artemis I flight, NASA adjusted the reentry trajectory for today's return, opting for a steeper, more direct descent to minimize the time the material is exposed to peak thermal stress.

We did all this in the 1960s, let's stop patting ourselves on the cultural back already. It's more of a cultural indictment than an accomplishment.

Your illustrations are more credible but we are in the 21st century, still no live video only poor quality still pictures, flying in tin cans without windows, still dropping at sea & Elon who can do better with live video's none of his crafts has shown any evidence leaving earth.

Just like pro wrestling, you can pretend it’s real to make it more entertaining for you, but reality is with NASA, it’s all staged.

Incredible animation the way avcoat chars and erodes to protect the crew is pure engineering genius will this steeper reentry profile be used for Artemis i II too
