He is pushing the nuts on centre gaps where they can only be counted once. Ypu see, when the nuts are positioned in corner gaps they get counted on two sides, meaning a single nut on corner is counted twice. *Am not good in English guys, so don't correct me*

Itโs an illusionโฆ the corner 2s get counted twice the first go around. By the last go around the โ2sโ are centered (on the sides) n only counted once.

Because your adjusting the corners making the -1 from the center and making it count for 2 for different sides of the square. Nothing fancy here
