God took on flesh and died on a cross, revealing the immeasurable worth of EVERY human life, in the womb and out of it. The Episcopal Church do better! Thanks be to God that Kim Leadbeater’s Assisted Dying Bill has been defeated. This pernicious legislation threatened two foundational principles: the sanctity of every human life and the protection of the vulnerable from the power of the State. The flawed reasoning in how this Bill was presented was profoundly troubling and reveals much about its sponsors. It would have placed the lives of the sick, disabled and dying into a state-sanctioned system for ending them. That is not compassion. It is a profound moral evil. Kim Leadbeater framed the debate by reducing grave concerns about coercion, safeguarding and the value of human life to obstacles to “choice”. That was deeply disturbing and wicked. A civilised society does not respond to suffering by helping people to die. It surrounds them with love, excellent palliative care and the unwavering assurance that their lives possess God-given dignity to their final breath. As a Christian, every life is sacred. Today, Parliament chose life. Deo gratias. The nation has been pulled back from the precipice. This dangerous government is attempting to destroy that which is sacred, of value and, importantly, the Christian principles that this nation is founded upon.
