Alibaba presents MIMO Controllable Character Video Synthesis with Spatial Decomposed Modeling Character video synthesis aims to produce realistic videos of animatable characters within lifelike scenes. As a fundamental problem in the computer vision and graphics community, 3D works typically require multi-view captures for per-case training, which severely limits their applicability of modeling arbitrary characters in a short time. Recent 2D methods break this limitation via pre-trained diffusion models, but they struggle for pose generality and scene interaction. To this end, we propose MIMO, a novel framework which can not only synthesize character videos with controllable attributes (i.e., character, motion and scene) provided by simple user inputs, but also simultaneously achieve advanced scalability to arbitrary characters, generality to novel 3D motions, and applicability to interactive real-world scenes in a unified framework. The core idea is to encode the 2D video to compact spatial codes, considering the inherent 3D nature of video occurrence. Concretely, we lift the 2D frame pixels into 3D using monocular depth estimators, and decompose the video clip to three spatial components (i.e., main human, underlying scene, and floating occlusion) in hierarchical layers based on the 3D depth. These components are further encoded to canonical identity code, structured motion code and full scene code, which are utilized as control signals of synthesis process. The design of spatial decomposed modeling enables flexible user control, complex motion expression, as well as 3D-aware synthesis for scene interactions. Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

For generative AI to become an interesting art tool, we need much more control over the output. The slot-machine-like nature of pure text-to-image leaves too much to chance. Using the "Real-time Latent Consistency Model" that I'm using in the example here, is the first time I truly got a glimpse of a future where we'll be able to use our artistic skills and sensibility, to get control over AI image gen. Systems like these will never be able to match the quality or originality of a skilled artist, it won't surprise us in the same way an artist can. Things are a mess in terms of the training data these models are based on, and the questions about copyright concerns and about a time when everything will look the same are very valid. At some point capabilities like these will be embedded in photoshop, and anyone will be able to generate a pretty picture. But to create interesting designs, to tell original stories and to surprise us, we need creatives and artists with something on their mind. We'll be able to create immersive worlds, by making brush-strokes and sculpt marks, without needing to worry about all the dials, plugins, wires of our 3d and 2d tools today. I love to sculpt, I love to draw, and I love to explore new mediums and new ways to create. The Gen AI tools we have today are far from perfect, and things need to be steered in a better direction. For that we need artists to help point the way. Gen AI isn't going away.. it's too powerful and has the potential to allow us to tell stories like never before. Like all other big technological shifts, tech like this will come at a cost, but it will also open up new opportunities and empower a new generation of storytellers. If an AI can control 1,000 robots to perform 1 million skills in 1 billion different simulations, then it may "just work" in our real world, which is simply another point in the vast space of possible realities. This is the fundamental principle behind why simulation works so effectively for robotics. Real-world teleoperation data scales linearly with human time (< 24 hrs/robot/day). Sim data scales exponentially with compute. There are 3 big trends for simulators in the near future: 1. Massive parallelization on large clusters. Physics equations are "just" matrix math at their core. I hear GPUs are good at matrix math 🔥. One can run 100K copies of simulation on a single GPU. To put this number in perspective: 1 hour of wallclock compute time gives a robot 10 years (!!) of training experience. That's how Neo was able to learn martial arts in a blink of an eye in the Matrix Dojo. 2. Generative graphics pipeline. Traditionally, simulators require a huge amount of manual effort from artists: 3D assets, textures, scene layouts, etc. But every component in the workflow can be automated: text-to-image, text-to-3D mesh, and LLMs that write Universal Scene Description (USD) files as a coding exercise. RoboCasa is one example of a prior work. 3. End2end neural net that acts as simulator itself. This is still bluesky research and quite far from replacing a graphics pipeline, but we are seeing some exciting signs-of-life based on video gen models: Sora, Veo2, CogVideoX, Hunyuan (text-to-video); and action-driven world models: GameNGen, Oasis, Genie-2, etc. Genesis does great on (1) for certain tasks, shows good promises on (2), and could become a data generation tool for reaching (3). Its sim2real capabilities for locomotion are good, but there's still a long way to go for contact-rich, dexterous manipulation. It shows a bold vision and is on the right path to providing a virtual cradle for embodied AI. It is open-source and puts a streamlined user journey at the front and center. I had the privilege to know Zhou Xian and play a small part in his project since a year ago. Xian has been crunching code non-stop on Genesis with a very small group of core devs. He often replied to my messages at 3 am. Zhenjia Xu from our GEAR team helped with sim2real experiments in his spare time. Genesis is truly a grassroot effort with an intense focus on quality engineering. Nothing gives me more joy than seeing the simulation ecosystem bloom. Robotics should be a moonshot initiative owned by all of humanity. Congratulations.

In this clip, Dr Jordan B Peterson and Charlie Kirk wrestle with two vitally important questions both for conservatives and for Western civilization. 1. What does it mean to be conservative and anti-woke when the majority of institutions are Woke? 2. What does it mean for a conservative to deem an institution to be irredeemable? Dr. Peterson highlights one danger that necessitates an answer to the first question: an anti-institutional conservative is an oxymoron. When conservatives advocate for the destruction of institutions they are indistinguishable from leftist radicals. This is the position that Woke Right radicals like Dave Greene and Auron MacIntyre embrace, they call themselves right wing radicals and admit they want to tear down existing institutions and replace them with something they claim will be different. The Woke Right passionately loathes Dr. Peterson for exposing the contradiction here. There is another danger here that doesn’t come up in the clip but Carl Benjamin 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 often brings it up. Conservatives are often led by the nose by Woke institutions. You can see this in countries like Canada and the UK where Woke Left policy is implemented most successfully by conservative governments, for example the Boris Johnson wave of millions of illegal aliens. Conservatives are typically conscientious and interested in following the rules, and being a good team player. Once the Woke Left worldview is baked into the institution they can fail to question it and execute the leftist agenda more effectively than the leftists can themselves. In effect when there is no good answer to question one then there are two ways conservatives go Woke: they can become a mirror image of the radicals they hate and actively embrace the Woke worldview as the Woke Right, or through blind fidelity to Woke institutions they can become captured pawns of a Woke worldview. In the clip Dr. Peterson and Mr. Kirk sidestep the first Woke trap of attempting to answer question one from the frame of the left-right political dichotomy. Realist conservatives and liberals should reject the right-left political dichotomy as a false frame trap. The left-right political dichotomy originates in the French National Assembly and represents an adversarial and unstable political project between two incompatible worldviews. It was intrinsically ideological and soon devolved into chaotic and violent revolution. There is obvious utility in this frame for the Woke but those of us who are anti-Woke should recognize it as a false frame, an ideological trap, and reject it. In order to answer question number one we need a better frame: We need to reject idealism for realism and reject ideals for telos. In the video clip Dr. Peterson explains the existential hierarchy of an institution, he explains that liberals are on the exploratory fringe, the conservatives are closer to center and he describes the core as explicitly religious. This religious core of the institution is better described as its telos. The telos as formulated by Aristotle is the final cause of the institution. In the clip Mr. Kirk describes this as the institutions serving the purpose for which they are chartered but it is deeper than that, the most fundamental institutions: marriage, family, parochial community, require no charter but nonetheless each has a telos. When an institution is in alignment with its telos it creates an abundance of fruits that are good, true or beautiful. It is easy to confuse the measurable fruits for the telos but the fruits are not the telos; the fruits are indicative of the institution's alignment with its telos. In this way, the telos of an institution becomes the proximal arbiter of merit and virtue. The merits required to be a professional basketball player may be radically different from those required for being a neurosurgeon. The virtuous member of one particular family may differ significantly from the virtuous member of another particular family. Though this proximal particularity is an important reality, an institutional telos can never arbitrate merits and virtues that are wholly dissimilar. Every telos is within the hierarchy of the ultimate telos: the unmoved mover, the supreme being, God. Elsewhere Dr. Peterson has described this teleological relationship as that of the game and the metagame which must be played simultaneously. Our Lord Jesus Christ also described it when he condensed the commandments into two: A Pharisee asks Jesus which commandment is the greatest. Jesus responds, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” —Matthew 22:36-40 Secularists often point out that some of the American founding fathers were not Christians but Deists. This fact strengthens the connection between telos, American constitutional republicanism, and Western civilization. Deism is a theistic rationalism that affirms and preserves monotheistic teleology from the materialist, reductionist, and idealist ravages of the enlightenment. Although critics like Jonathan Pageau are right to decry the abandonment of symbolism, Deism is likely the greatest possible abstraction—and therefore the biggest possible tent—that can still bear the load of Western civilization. To put it bluntly, to participate positively in Western Civilization, your metaphysics must be compatible with monotheistic teleology. That is the outermost wall between civilization and the barbarians. With telos explained, let us turn our attention to the barbarians and the Woke traitors who conspire to hold open the gates. At other points in the interview—not in this clip—Dr. Peterson and Mr. Kirk identify the parasitic nature of the Woke. The alignment of an institution with its telos creates an abundance of fruits; the proximal cause of Woke is to illegitimately seize that abundance. This is done by disrupting the connection to telos so the wealth can be looted without triggering an immune response. In the clip, Dr. Peterson describes this situation as Aaron and the Israelites fashioning a golden calf and engaging in orgiastic revelry when Moses goes up the mountain. In nature, this is analogous to a parasite disrupting the function of its host to feed and avoid detection. The Woke have a vast array of tools to disrupt telos, from simple to sophisticated, from general purpose to highly specialist. The following are some select examples: corporations are being induced to replace their shareholder model of governance with a nebulous and highly arbitrary stakeholder models; DEI programs are instituted in every manner of institution from governments to hobbyist conventions; climate change demonizes carbon dioxide and since all human activity produces carbon dioxide it is an override on any institutional telos; Communism and the UN Sustainable Development Goals demand the telos of every institution be subordinated to the arbitrary construct of the human species-being; fascism claims every telos must be subordinated to an arbitrary state construct and Nazism more specifically claims every telos must be subordinated to racialist state construct which is effectively a communist species-being that explicitly excludes and scapegoats based on race. The last two examples were totalitarian ideologies. In the American constitutional republic it is the protection of natural rights that secures the pursuit of institutional telos from parasitation by totalitarian ideology. It is not realist conservatives but realist liberals who ought to be the first line of defense against Woke parasitation. In this way Thomas Jefferson’s immortal words could be rephrased, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Telos." Now to answer question one, the role of the realist conservative is to preserve and execute on telos of institutions and to rebuke institutions that go Woke. This means that realist conservatives ought to facilitate a discernment of and realignment with telos whenever possible. To answer question two, an institution becomes irredeemable when it becomes so overburdened by Woke parasites that it cannot be recovered. Nonetheless the telos the institution was pursuing still exists. Conservatives ought to do what Elon Musk does when one of his rockets fails: learn from the failure and build a better one. Today I’m going to tell you the strange story about how the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association went over to the dark side. The HKJA is in the news at the moment—for NOT telling its own members who’s running it. It’s pretty weird. If you go to their website and click to find out the names of the executive committee, you get this: “The Executive Committee has earlier decided not to publicise the list of Executive Committee members.” Odd, no? If there is ONE just one defining characteristic of journalists, it is that we love to see our names in print! So how can we be represented by a mystery group of people who are too shy to share their names?! . LOUD MEMBERS So who are they? Well, officially, no one knows. But Hong Kong does have a lively journalistic community, and they have worked out who are the dominant voices are in the organization. - There’s Selina Cheng who was famously sacked by the Wall Street Journal, which is not a Hong Kong newspaper. - There’s Danny Vincent who used to work for the BBC, which is not a Hong Kong news outlet. - There’s Mak Yin-Ting, freelance reporter for Radio France Internationale, which is not a Hong Kong radio station. - Then there is a Swiss photographer named Marc Progin, who achieved notoriety as the person who thoughtlessly shut a door, halting an innocent bank staff member’s journey, just before a violent protester who savagely attacked him. [vid clip provided] - The other person named is So Chun-yeung, a photographer for Channel WE, a new blog set up on the bones of Channel C, an online media outlet which collapsed in April, owing lots of unpaid salaries. These individuals may be very nice people. But do they epitomize the Hong Kong journalism community? These people who work for the infamous western mainstream media on the other side of the planet? Knowing the history of the HKJA is helpful. . 1. NO POLITICS The HKJA was founded in 1968 – by an Australian named Jack Spackman, who mainly worked for a Hong Kong newspaper called the China Mail. I knew him in the 1980s. The founder of the HKJA used to remind young journalists like me that we should report on political groups but never join them. (Yes, I was young once -- pic in the video.) The tall, thin, friendly Australian would say: “Leave politics to the politicians. But don’t let them get away with anything.” . 2. CIA ARRIVES Jack left Hong Kong in 1987. In 1989, various CIA and NED agents started long-term major operations in Hong Kong, with their usual modus operandi: setting up trade unions and groups to feed the media with the CIA's Three Weaponized Terms: freedom, democracy and human rights. In 1990, the NED started funding a new group called the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions. In 1994, the NED started funding another new group: the Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor. And in the same period, the HKJA became a political body. I stopped going to the meetings when they were chaired by Emily Lau, tireless critic of China. . 3. TEAMING UP WITH THE N.E.D. In 2002, the two NED-financed groups in Hong Kong met with the Hong Kong Journalists Association and other groups to create a joint operation called the Civil Human Rights Front, to organize anti-China street protests and criticize the government. How did that fit with Spackman’s vision of “leaving politics to the politicians”? Another group joined the cluster – the Civic Party, which also went through a period of getting funding directly from the NED. . 4. TEAMING UP WITH THE UK By the early 2000s, the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association had got into the habit of producing an annual report saying that press freedom in Hong Kong was dead or dying – but it was produced in partnership with Article19, a UK-based political body. The HKJA did this every year until 2006. Why was a Hong Kong body working with the west to demonize its own community? Bit odd. . 5. QUOTING THE INFAMOUS RSF On similar lines, HKJA leaders started to quote the RSF press freedom index. But real journalists never quote that index because it had already been exposed as a CIA-NED scam. Originally RSF told people they were not US-financed, and got their money by book sales. Then real journalists discovered that they didn’t sell books! And RSF was forced to reveal their funding had really been from the CIA and later, the NED. . 6. MILLIONS IN MYSTERY FUNDING In 2014, an over-staffed HK blog called House News closed down. This was no surprise. Few people read it, no one advertised in it, and it was reportedly losing HK$600,000 a month. But what happened next WAS a surprise. It was relaunched a few months later as wealthy anti-China website called Stand News, anonymously financed. On its board was Denise Ho, associated with the Oslo Freedom Forum, later revealed by the BBC to be secret US-based organizer of protests in Hong Kong. [clip provided] Stand News overseas director was a man named Evan Fowler, who had co-founded a China-hostile website called the Hong Kong Free Press, home of the notorious yellowface hoaxer named Brian P. Kern. A Stand News reporter, Ronson Chan, became chairman of the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association from June 2021. After the bosses of Stand News closed it down, investigators found the website had a reserve cash account containing $8 million US dollars. Lot of spare cash for a blog with no functioning business model! Later, at a court hearing, financial investigators revealed that they had found millions of dollars had been delivered to Stand News quote "in a clandestine manner" before the 2019 riots broke out. You decide who was really behind Stand News. . 7. THE $2.50 INSTANT JOURNALISTS During the violent insurgency of 2019, all pretense of professionalism at the HKJA was killed stone dead. It seemed like anybody could get an official HKJA membership, and it was just HK$20 if you said you were a student – that’s about US$2.50. I was teaching a screenwriting program at university and some of my students were reinventing themselves as journalists. No accreditation, no training course, no professional standards, no exams, nothing. . 8. SERVING THE WEST Today, it may seem obvious that the Hong Kong Journalists Association does not represent Hong Kong journalists. It comes across as a western political body with a relentlessly anti-China stance. Its job is to push the western media narrative. When the western media say Hong Kong is dead, China killed Hong Kong, there’s no freedom in Hong Kong, all the freedoms have been lost – the HKJA’s job is to say YES. . A NEW CHAPTER? Good stories have Epilogues, so let’s have one Journalism is an important part of a community’s civic services. For too long, Hong Kong's civic sector has been dominated by people paid, often secretly, by the west, to drive the west’s political anti-China narrative. TYPHOON IN A THIMBLE The Little Engine That Screamed In a modest garage in Santa Ana, California, in 1945, Leroy “Roy” Cox began with wooden popguns. Metal was still scarce after the war, so he employed local housewives to turn out toys for children. When metal returned, he shifted to tether cars, small fast racers that ran on strings in circles. A devastating fire in August 1946 destroyed his first operation, but Roy rebuilt quickly in a larger space on Poinsettia Avenue. By 1947 he was selling a complete racing tether car using outside engines and turning serious profit. In 1949 he designed his own .045 cubic-inch engine for those cars. Then came the breakthrough. Working with engineers Mark Mier and Bill Fogler, Roy spent eight months perfecting an entirely new engine, the .049 cubic-inch Space Bug. It entered full production in 1952 under the newly formalized L.M. Cox Manufacturing Company. The little two-stroke glow engine was a mechanical marvel. Its steel piston and cylinder were machined to tolerances of twenty-five millionths of an inch, thinner than a human hair, so no piston rings were needed. A platinum-coil glow plug, briefly heated by a 1.5-volt battery, started the fire. Once running, the platinum acted as a catalyst with the methanol fuel, keeping combustion alive without a traditional spark. The exhaust carried the distinctive sweet-sharp scent of castor oil mixed in the fuel for lubrication. The engine was tiny, cheap (around four dollars for later versions), and loud. It produced a high-pitched, furious whine, which those who heard it described as a swarm of angry hornets or something spinning faster than it had any right to. The Soundtrack Of Saturday Morning In America The sound quickly became the soundtrack of Saturday mornings across America. Boys mounted it on balsa-wood control-line planes, free-flight models, and even early radio-control experiments. It powered everything from simple trainers to detailed warbirds. In 1958, Cox engines drove the flying attractions in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, exposing millions more children to the thrill. Innovation followed innovation. In 1955 and 1956, engineer William Selzer designed the Babe Bee with an extruded aluminum crankcase, making it lighter, stronger, and easier to produce. It sold for $3.95 and became one of the most successful model engines ever. In 1960 Roy hired legendary engine designer Bill Atwood, who created the high-performance Tee Dee series. Roy Cox had become the most successful model-engine manufacturer on earth. But in 1969, after the death of his wife Myrtle and amid his own health struggles, he sold the company to Leisure Dynamics. He retired. The brand continued under new ownership, expanding its product lines, but the original garage-inventor spirit began to fade. Leisure Dynamics faced bankruptcy in 1980. Roy Cox himself died in 1981 at age 75. A former Cox executive, Bill Selzer, bought the company out of bankruptcy in 1983 and returned manufacturing to Santa Ana. For a time the business flourished again with new products and larger facilities, moving to Corona, California, in 1990.
