Humanoid robots can fail and do unsafe things in countless ways – hardware malfunctions, software glitches, cyberattacks, freak edge cases, or human operator error. A hundred years ago, there were 20 vehicle accident deaths per 100 million miles in the US. Today, that number is under 1.5 – but... not zero. Robots won’t be 100% safe – and maybe that shouldn’t be the expectation. We're in the “early automobile” phase for humanoids. We don’t yet have enough real-world data on robots working among people to define what “safe enough” truly means. But robots do need to be among people – to assist the elderly, and to take on dangerous, repetitive, and tedious tasks. We’ll need to establish reasonable safety standards that protect people without stalling progress. If we’re too risk-averse, we risk stagnation; if we’re too cavalier, we invite harm.show more

Elon just dropped a MAJOR nugget on how Tesla is going to be training Optimus to do real world tasks. They are building an Optimus Academy, which is a large scale, dedicated real-world training facility to accelerate the development of Optimus. The Academy will deploy thousands of Optimus units, potentially 10,000 to 30,000 robots, in a controlled realistic environment where they perform self-play, experiment with tasks, iterate on behaviors, and continuously generate training data through trial and error. The Tesla bots will also run millions of simulations in Tesla’s high-fidelity physics-accurate engine, allowing Optimus to close the “sim-to-real gap” by using these real-world observations to refine and validate the simulations! “You’re actually highlighting an important limitation and difference from cars. Assuming it’s very safe, who wouldn’t want a robot to watch over your kids, take care of your pets, and help with daily life? There just aren’t enough young people to take care of the old people. When will a team of robots be able to beat a professional soccer team in the game of soccer? 🤔 Many in robotics have thought that it would take at least 15-20 years for robots to reach that point. But today 60 Minutes showed some of Google Deep Mind's work on robots playing soccer. Robots are using neural nets to learn how to walk, kick and play soccer, and they're improving very rapidly. It might be a lot sooner than most people think before we have robots able to beat professional athletes at their own sports.

Mocap is expensive, dangerous edge cases are rare, and you can’t ask humans to repeatedly fall or crash. Video2Robot tackles this by converting videos into physics-grounded humanoid simulations. Motion is generated to respect balance, inertia, ground contact, and joint limits, then directly retargeted to robot simulators. One prompt can generate a full humanoid motion sequence, including multi-agent interactions and failure cases like falls or collisions, scenarios that are hard or impossible to capture safely in the real world. The pipeline is model-agnostic and works with existing video generators, making it a practical way to scale data for robots. Sad that we all have to be this cautious around people who should ordinarily protect our own for us too, but that’s the reality of the world we live in. Trauma and heartbreak lurks at every corner and the least we can do as people charged with the responsibility to care for those who aren’t strong or experienced enough yet, is be “overly” invested in protecting these kids. God bless ❤️
