@56blackcat It depends on the time of year and location of the troughs. Some are directly filled from boreholes we've installed, others we top up with bowsers that are filled from boreholes or from rivers

It's nice that they seem to respect the troughs as clean water drinking fountains & don't try to climb in to wallow around - they're very good at sharing. Aside from the mud, tho, it would get pretty crowded pretty quickly in there. 😄

As the dry season takes hold in Tsavo, the elephant visitors come to Ithumba in a steady stream. Up to 150 congregate by our water troughs sometimes. Head Keeper Benjamin and the team are ready. Behind these full troughs is Water for Wildlife — our complex, fully committed conservation programme. Northern Tsavo is marked by high salinity levels, rendering much of its water undrinkable. To solve the water challenge, we established a desalination plant in Ithumba. Now, we can take saline water directly from the Ithumba boreholes, process it through the plant, and make it potable. Multiple times a day, our bowsers deliver water and top up troughs, dispersing the wealth throughout the landscape. This innovation has also transformed operations for our teams and the KWS units who are also based in Ithumba. Since we began providing drinkable water, wildlife have come back to the area in droves. Scenes from one of our most recent field trips into Tsavo West National Park, including a thrilling sighting of a large elephant herd! Many of these students from Silanga Comprehensive School had never visited Tsavo before or seen the wonderful wildlife who live on their doorstep. As Samuel, our Community Officer reports, “We had a lot of fun and unforgettable memories were made!” Every year, we lead thousands of Tsavo-area students on fully subsidised field trips into national parks and protected areas to change perceptions of elephants and other wildlife. That belief drives our community programmes. 85 field trips each year bring children face-to-face with the wildlife that shares their land – often for the very first time. Two minutes is all it took. Between me leaving the water for wildlife and the birds mobbing it. Just look at their delight!😍 Drinking and bathing - all that joy from just a turn of the tap from me. This week will be very hot and most natural sources of water have dried up. Please provide water for our wildlife. Day and night. You'll never find an easier, more satisfying way to save a life.

An urgent call came in: 3 elephants were stuck in a deep & steep-sided dam, escape was impossible – without help! Teams from the SWT and KWS responded, and Wildlife Works loaned a backhoe, which we drove to the scene on our flatbed truck. After hours of digging, all 3 elephants were able to climb to safety using a new passageway; a victorious outcome for the elephants & their rescuers. Learn more about our field projects:

Thirst knows no boundaries. This bear in Koppal (Karnataka) was caught on camera searching for water in a plastic tub as the forests dry up. A clear sign of the devastating impact of the rising temperatures on our wildlife. Our forests are parched and our wildlife is suffering. Are we even bothered about climate change yet? How many elephants can you count? During his morning patrol over Tsavo, pilot Roan tallied more than 150 elephants in this herd. It’s a sign of the times: When food and water are plentiful, elephants can aggregate in great numbers without putting too much stress on the landscape. This ecosystem is home to Kenya’s biggest population of elephants. Spanning 50,000 square kilometres, it is prime elephant country. While Tsavo’s elephants enjoy themselves, we will be patrolling overhead and on the ground, working to keep them safe. Learn more and support our conservation work:

Did you know that the African Elephant is the world’s largest land animal? Adult males, or bull elephants, can stand up to 3 meters high and weigh up to 6,000 kg on average. We're giving our giant neighbours safe passage home. Human-wildlife conflict is one of the greatest threats facing elephants today. As habitats shrink and resources become scarce, elephants are increasingly tempted to leave protected land in search of greener pastures. Understandably, communities don’t welcome their presence and can go to extreme measures to drive them off their land. While we work to prevent incursions in the first place, we have also developed productive relationships with local communities to prevent them from taking matters into their own hands. By ground or by air, we provide a rapid response to shepherd elephants back into the national park, working in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service. Last year alone, our Aerial Unit helped over 400 elephants find safe passage home. In one memorable month, our pilots shepherded a herd of 50 back into the park, then we pulled off an ambitious operation to translocate an elephant family of three who had been stuck on community land for over a year. We teamed up with Johnny Vegas at ‘The Poisoned Swan’ to raise awareness for the environmental impact of butts down drains. Didn’t realise it was a problem? Neither did Johnny! But butts are made of plastic and covered in toxins, which contaminate water and harm wildlife.

Residents of Bronkhorstspruit, in the past several months our teams have invested in upgrading the water treatment plant with an effort to improve its efficiency. We are currently working with the National Department of Water and Sanitation to resolve the sludge problem that has for years affected the City’s ability to pump water to the treatment plant. We apologise for the prolonged water outage that has impacted the area for the past several weeks. We can assure you that we’ve placed significant effort to restore water supply. City of Tshwane

We’re counting our blessings! Wildlife conservation comes with more than its fair share of challenges, but we still begin and end every day filled with gratitude. We are thankful for our team, who work bravely and tirelessly to forge a future for Kenya’s wildlife. We’re thankful for the little miracles that unfold every day, from orphans who overcome enormous odds to matriarchs who bravely lead their families in the wild. And we’re grateful for the extraordinary ecosystems we have the privilege to help protect. Most of all, we are thankful for YOU. Your steadfast support fuels our conservation work, for 48 years and counting. You have helped us give more than 320 orphaned elephants and 20 black rhinos a second chance at life – and paved the way for the next generation. The 85 calves born to our ex-orphans (including 17 since last Thanksgiving!) are living proof of this legacy. Family is everything to elephants. It is everything to us, too. Thank you for being part of ours!
