Rabies is a viral infection that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. It is usually transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, most commonly a dog. Here are some key points about rabies: 1. Hydrophobia: Hydrophobia is a classic symptom of rabies, characterized by fear of water and difficulty swallowing due to painful spasms of the throat muscles. This symptom is often associated with the later stages of the disease. 2. Incubation period: The incubation period for rabies can vary widely, ranging from a few days to several years, but is typically 1-3 months. During this time, the virus replicates at the site of entry and then travels along peripheral nerves to the central nervous system. 3. Clinical presentation: Once symptoms develop, rabies presents in two forms: furious rabies, which is characterized by agitation, hyperactivity, and aggression, and paralytic or dumb rabies, which presents with weakness, paralysis, and a stuporous state. 4. Diagnosis: Diagnosis of rabies is based on clinical presentation, history of animal exposure, and laboratory testing, including detection of viral RNA in saliva or skin biopsy samples or detection of rabies-specific antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid. 5. Prevention: Pre-exposure prophylaxis with the rabies vaccine is recommended for individuals at high risk of exposure, such as veterinarians, animal handlers, and travelers to regions where rabies is endemic. Post-exposure prophylaxis includes wound care, administration of rabies immune globulin and rabies vaccine. 6. Treatment: Once symptoms develop, there is no effective treatment for rabies, and the disease is almost always fatal. Therefore, prompt post-exposure prophylaxis is crucial to prevent the onset of symptoms. Learn more at #MedX #MedTwitter #FOAMed #MedEd

Rabies. Once the encephalitis sets in, there's no going back, unfortunately.

Rabies Some doctors have become numb to patients’ right to privacy. I hope permission was granted to post this publicly. Even with permission, pixelation of the patient’s face should be done before posting. This is especially sensitive— rabies is almost always fatal.
