I built a native Metal renderer for Minecraft, and a shader that takes advantage of it: volumetric fog, dynamic lighting, water reflections and more. It runs at 60fps at full retina resolution on a 5-year-old MacBook. I've always hated how laggy minecraft is with shaders, now it's solved. Shoutout... show more

This will be the best way to play minecraft on mac

will be sharing more updates over the next few days!

very cool! would be awesome if someone could get it working with this project that runs MC Java edition on iPhone/iPad 👀

Interesting 👀

hmmm... i suppose it probably is now possible to rip out a huge amount of the Minecraft Java internals and get them running reasonably. You could probably expose the same api...

definitely, it's especially true now that the java edition is unobfuscated

i wonder if you can just tear out the entirety of the extant Minecraft render engine and replace it with C and Vulkan.

the metal renderer in the demo already replaces vulkan/opengl. but yea replacing some java rendering with c is possible

yeah i was going to correct this, i didn't realize minecraft had already been re-written to do some amount of renderer work in Vulkan

Awesome! Please Open Source this, it's great.

Planning to! Stay tuned

You didn't build anything.

please opensource it please please please 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

this is cool!

That looks very good. Now we have vibrant visuals on Java.

YES! and my current implementation is not too opinionated so it still feels close to vanilla

Very cool what people are doing with games. TL just showed me something similar, I think, yesterday. Are yall working together or is this something different?

Noah inspired this! But we aren't working together

i need this for my winter minecraft arc. OS?

I'm on macOS 27

peak, i started to make something similar for minecraft too, tho i want many many many more renderer features

I'll open source this soon and you can build on it if you wish!

oh shit !

Amazing, wanted to do this for so long!

WOAH that's crazy

would it be possible to port existing shaders, let's say, complimentary or photon?

Possible, but it is a decent bit of work to write the compatibility layer so they work with the native Metal renderer

Oh wow 60fps in MINECRAFT on an M1 how revolutionary

The amount of effort required to match legacy modding performance is getting comical

BTW the best use-case for AI. It can read boring documentation (even autonomously through websearch + context7 + mintlify MCP) and implement everything properly for you. Every single good unoptimized game could have a "Claude, optimize. Make no mistakes" and we'd all be happy.

This just looks like complimentary shaders but a bit different

i need this yesterday

what render distance and frame-time spread go with the 60fps result? a repeatable route through dense geometry and water would make the native renderer comparison easier to interpret than average fps alone, especially when chunks start loading.

This looks amazing! 60fps with shaders on a 5-year-old MacBook is wild lol

什么光影

Absolutely amazing! LF to playing it asap

Hey man! You should definitely participate here: Looking forward to see what setup you can come up with :)

"I built" no. an ai did it

as someone who only plays minecraft to build dirt houses this is genuinely making me want to actually learn shaders

you didn't build shit nice larp tho

yessss can’t wait for the open source version

link?

praying for this to be shared because playing on my m3 with shaders is very hot

Will share very soon

Could an M5 iPad Pro 13 be supported in the future?

how do you think it’s gonna work on M3 8gb ram macbook pro? i want to play minecraft this winter with friends and i am super excited about your rerender for minecraft
