Your brain will see the negative or opposite when you stare at the colors like this. And because green is the shadow of magenta and magenta is the shadow of green… They flip-flop.

The cones in your eyes are exhausted by the exposure. Relaxing them makes the opposite cones more enhanced. Starting with the original colors and then doing the process in reverse makes the frog pink again. There’s no colors that “don’t exist.” It’s just tired eyes.

I think you meant "I can make you see colours that are not present." And for those wondering, the mechanism is photoreceptor fatigue. The activated receptors are depleted, and when the stimulus is discontinued the rested photereceptors overcompensate, inverting perceived colour.

First time I didn’t stare at the X at all and blinked a lot to make sure there was no tricks. Totally as Pete says, just goes to black and white. I stared for only the 10 second countdown at the X without blinking and Holy Shit the colors weren’t even the ones there previously.

This happens when the green color receptors in your eyes get tired from looking at a bright green color. When you look away at a white or neutral surface, those tired green receptors rest, and your fresh red and blue receptors take over, making your brain see a glowing pink.
