For your top-down style (which looks amazing, btw), consider your pirate buddy. How do the attacks north and south facing feel?

The pirate guy actually only has left and right animations and is only for side scrolling. The pokemon like looking characters are 8 directional top down. I still haven't tried north and south attacks, but wanna try with a zelda type game soon!
