What accounts like this fail to mention is that punkah-pullers pre-dated the British, and were used by the Mughals and the pre-British Indian elite. They like to paint the British as uniquely exploitative and evil, but the reality is that there's pretty much no exploitation and evil the British engaged in that they didn't already engage in prior to British arrival. (Bonus points if you can spot the dude with three legs 🤭. Another shoddy AI job 🙄)
