Veterans deserve separate legislative attention and special respect. And this must apply not only to veterans themselves, but also to veterans’ families. Unfortunately, this is still not fully reflected in state policy or in communities’ work. But the family of a veteran, the family of our fallen warrior, the family of someone missing in action, the family of a prisoner of war – families must be full-fledged subjects of veterans policy. I ask the Government of Ukraine, together with the Verkhovna Rada and veterans themselves, to prepare the relevant legislative proposals. And perhaps, if there is a need for it – and to ensure that proper respect is reflected in legislation – perhaps we should codify the legislation concerning veterans and adopt a Veterans Code. The Take Care of America's Veterans Act is an omnibus bill that combines 62 pieces of bipartisan legislation into one bill. Some of these bills have been pending in Congress for years, and lawmakers hope to push them over the finish line by combining them into one bill. But this does not come without controversy. PBS News' Cecilia Lallmann reports.

I’m from a family of veterans. My dad was a Navy veteran. Both my grandfathers and many of my uncles served. Our state is home to almost 500,000 veterans who exemplify the best of our state. Thank you for your service. I also appreciate the family members of those who served – as we know, it’s a shared sacrifice.

From helping establish a veterans cemetery in Spanish Fort to bringing more than 1,000 World War II veterans to D.C. through Honor Flight South Alabama, Alabama is grateful for Pat’s service to our state. Pleased to recognize him as the January “Veteran of the Month.”

A constituent from Venice recently brought an issue to our office that Catholic veterans are currently unable to have a crucifix on their headstone at VA cemeteries. So I led a letter to the VA urging this policy change and got 45 colleagues to sign in support! And now the House is already taking steps to direct the VA to make the change. Our veterans fought for this country. They should be laid to rest with the dignity and honor they so rightfully deserve, including the ability for Catholic veterans to have a crucifix on their headstone. Check out the letter:

Veterans were denied housing for years because outdated federal rules blocked veterans receiving disability benefits from receiving the housing assistance they need. We changed that, and now Los Angeles is moving quickly to bring more Veterans home for good. I led a bipartisan coalition of more than 50 Mayors to overturn the policy that forced Veterans to choose between housing and their disability benefits. With that barrier removed, the House Our Vets initiative is accelerating permanent placements, cutting red tape, and partnering with more property owners to get Veterans inside faster. HACLA has streamlined the entire process, from consolidated applications to faster voucher issuance, HUD-approved waivers, and parallel inspections, so that Veterans can get housed without delay.

It often happens that the state, with all its potential and resources, is by no means a veteran’s greatest source of support; nor is the community – and not even the person formally called a veteran’s assistant in a community or a veteran support specialist in a civilian hospital. Instead, it is another veteran, or an effective brigade patronage service, or some particular veteran community in a municipality or region. We need to direct state resources effectively and coordinate community resources. I expect this to be one of the key objectives of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. We also need to do more work with our partners around the world to ensure support for veteran programs here in Ukraine. I ask the Government of Ukraine to propose a reform program by the Feast of the Intercession. From the address at the 9th International Veterans Forum (2/3)

And any resources that we have having in my first congress, I served on the VA committee, and you heard time and time again despite adding more and more money to the VA because they can't deal with the backlogs, they need more funds to do that, then why are we using resources that are at the VA to assist illegal immigrants and the processing at ICE? This has to be the longest standing ovation for anyone or anything I have ever witnessed. 4000 high school students in Normandy, France standing to honor our World War II veterans. This area in northern France has not forgotten the events of 80 years ago. Honored and humbled beyond words to be here with my daughter volunteering with the Best Defense Foundation supporting their mission to “take care of the ones who took care of us” assisting World War II veterans as they return to the sand and soil on which they fought.
