Veterans deserve separate legislative attention and special respect. And this must apply not only to veterans themselves, but also to veterans’ families. Unfortunately, this is still not fully reflected in state policy or in communities’ work. I met with participants of the Ukrainian Youth Forum “Youth Acts.” Today, our country celebrates Youth Day. Of course, for all of us, security is the first priority. But the Government must also take very specific, clear action to support all normal forms of public life in Ukraine – so that Ukrainian families, our people, our youth, and our children have a normal environment for life in Ukraine, one that is as fulfilling as possible. The renewed Government of Ukraine is now preparing the Cabinet of Ministers’ program of action, and I expect that civilian aspects of life, and youth policy in particular, will receive sufficient attention in the Government’s program. And we all understand the depth of this task – it is not simply about something the state can give, or something a person can do – independently or in cooperation within their community or with the state. It is much more than that. It is about reasons to stay in Ukraine, to live in Ukraine, to plan your own life and your family’s life in Ukraine, and to know that Ukraine will care about you and your family, about your future.

I think that the VA's mission, being a veteran myself, should be to support veterans, not illegal immigrants. And any resources that we have having in my first congress, I served on the VA committee, and you heard time and time again despite adding more and more money to the VA because they can't deal with the backlogs, they need more funds to do that, then why are we using resources that are at the VA to assist illegal immigrants and the processing at ICE? I think that's completely unconscionable, not only as a veteran, but somebody that served this country. I think if the people in my district certainly knew that money that was appropriated to the VA, that those people are using those resources, uh, to help illegal immigrants through ICE would be completely objectionable to everybody in my district. You served us, and now you deserve our service. I also want to ask all of my followers and fans to do more than enjoy the holiday or post a picture of a flag. It is our turn to serve these heroes. My tradition is bringing pizza to the vets at the Veterans Affairs center in LA and hanging with them to make sure they know how thankful I am. You can make your own tradition - thank a veteran, buy them dinner, or just write to your politicians and demand that we take better care of our heroes.

I am glad to welcome the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, to Ukraine – a friend of our state, a person who does so much to support us, to stop the war, and to reliably guarantee security. Today, we held a substantive discussion on a wide range of issues. Significant attention was paid to the attack the Russians carried out against Poland yesterday. Everything indicates that the launch of Russian drones into Polish territory through the airspace of Ukraine and Belarus was deliberate and by no means accidental. Unfortunately, Russia retains the ability to continue and expand its aggression. Strong steps are needed – not only from Europe – strong pressure that will truly limit the potential of Russian warmongering. I am grateful to Finland for supporting all our sanctions work. We expect the 19th package of EU sanctions. I am also grateful for the support of our path to the EU and the opening of clusters. A separate and essential matter is shelters. In Ukraine, we value Finland’s participation in such initiatives as the Shelter Coalition. This helps us not only at the state level but also at the community level. It is important to intensify the work of these coalitions, and all cooperation that supports our country, communities, and every person.

2026 is a special year for our state. Ukraine is marking anniversaries: the adoption of the Constitution, the establishment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the restoration of our state symbols and the hryvnia. And the culmination of all this is August 24, 2026 – Independence Day of Ukraine, the 35th anniversary of its restoration. It is important that in such a year, Ukraine is giving rise to new, landmark elements of its state-building. Today, I submitted to Parliament a law on the Ukrainian National Pantheon. The names of all the heroes who, across different centuries and eras, fought for Ukraine and inspired Ukraine will be brought together and forever inscribed in our history – with a capital letter, with great respect and attention from the state. From a Ukraine that respects itself, values its people, and defends what is its own: its right to be Ukrainian. When no one, ever, will dictate how we should live, how we should speak, whom we should love, whom we should be grateful to, or which heroes we should honor. I first introduced the Ernest Peltz Accrued Veterans Benefits Act two Congresses ago. For years, I’ve worked closely with the Peltz family, veterans service organizations, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to craft legislation to correct a moral wrong. My bill eliminates the burden on a veteran’s surviving family by ensuring that the veteran is entitled to receive their pre-approved pension benefits within the month that death occurs. I represent #NY21—serving the largest number of veterans in any district in NY State. That’s why I’m proud to take action to make sure no family mourning the loss of a beloved veteran has to deal with VA red tape and bureaucratic mistakes. This commonsense bipartisan legislation honors the legacy of World War II veteran Ernest Peltz and takes a critical step toward improving the VA’s effectiveness and accountability. In passing my legislation, Congress will rightfully honor veterans for their service and guarantee their families the dignity and respect they have earned.
