“How much does this deal cost?” A straight question deserves a straight answer. The Government refuses to disclose the cost of the Chagos deal, they can’t even agree how much it cost amongst themselves. The Government Actuary’s Department has stated that it cost £34.7 billion. Ministers won’t agree that it does. Given the pressures on the Defence budget means capability cuts are coming, doubling-down and wasting billions on this deal - that the US no longer supports - is a ludicrous decision.
