I hadn't checked out server authority in a while as I was busy with other things, but seeing that crossroads was converted to server authority in preparation for The Hunt: R20, I wanted to see the state of it To be honest, I am quite disappointed.🧵

The state that crossroads is in right now, is not fun. ESPECIALLY on high ping. Movement still on server authority with the IAS scripts sucks, it feels delayed, it feels clunky, and it mispredicts more than is acceptable Items don't work well. Using the sword is near impossible, hits don't hit and lunges mispredict. hit a rocket shot on your screen head on with someone? Nope! Rocket disappears and doesn't explode, server explodes it somewhere else later on. Want to use the slingshot fly glitch? You can, but it will mispredict a lot. Not even mentioning the fact that sounds are playing like 5 times when equipping and using items Going on the trampoline, only the server sets your velocity so you suddenly teleport in the air, this is technically a dev implementation problem but highlights the main problem with the server authority API, it's annoyingly strict in how you implement things.

Here are some clips of me just playing the game, all of these were in the same 11 minute clip, it was hard remembering what the issues all were because of the amount of times I experienced these issues

In this clip, it's a bit hard to tell, but this was NOT at all the way i was trying to move, my movements were completely messed up and it was moving me all over the place in directions I was not even trying to go This specifically felt AWFUL when this happened

I could go on and on about all the issues I had, but to me it's clear that server authority is not ready, and never was. Some of these issues stem from the server authoritative model itself, and are hard problems to solve. I tried to exclude some of these examples, mainly player collisions, but improvement is needed everywhere. I don't want to discredit the SAuth team's work for this though, I know this is a huge feature, and I know it's extremely hard to get right. I know the team behind this is very optimistic about it and truly do care for it, even reaching out to me when I said server authority wasn't ready in the past.

All I hope is that SAuth improves more than just minor patches, even if the engine problems of server authority are fixed, the api continues to be one of the biggest hurdle in server authority, and ends up causing the most issues due to how fragile and delicate it is. I don't know the solution to the API problem, and with the feature technically out of beta, it makes me worried for the future of this feature as now future updates must be backwards compatible. If these issues aren't addressed though, server authority isn't going to be adopted. Crossroads is the first time I was able to see the state of server authority in live servers with real players with servers across the globe. I know this tech has the potential to be amazing, it's already used in many top competitive games, and almost all valve multiplayer games (even local coop games like portal 2!), and many don't even realize it. I want roblox's server authority implementation to be like this too, where many players don't even realize it's being used, there's so many benefits to this model, but right now it's not there.

I'm working on my own game with server authority. I use a custom character controller so I think it's less prone to mispredicts but rollback seems kind of buggy for some reason where often you will jitter a lot especially when sliding into walls

Hey Kohl, thanks for the feedback! We had a bug in the code and it should be patched now. There's a reason we're publishing early to stress test! Please keep the bug reports coming, the promise of server authority is we can have 0 latency gameplay without any cheating!

they 100% ai generated the entirety of the server authority code for crossroads, playtested each weapon once against a dummy and said “yep thats good, onto the next classic game” like i think most of these issues is just bad server authority luau code

Same shit happening with SFOTH IV, an admin had the whole community looking for issues and tryna figure out how to fix it. Hopefully they turn off server Auth though its genuinely unplayable

Some projectiles, like Superball did not register properly that causes bad aims because this toolset uses server-side script. In server authority, it will suffer register latency.

Gonna keep it real, that demo is NOT representative of what server authority looks and feels like.

Blake Edwards on the conditions he laid out before accepting to direct "A Shot in the Dark" (1964): "'A Shot in the Dark' (1964) is nothing like Marcel Archard’s play, that’s for a start. I was asked to save the situation. They had quite a bit of money involved in this project. Peter Sellers was threatening to pull out because he didn’t like the screenplay. He said that the only way he would continue with the project would be if I took it over. I said that the only way I could possibly take it over, under such emergency conditions, would be that I would not be obliged to do anything like Archard’s play because a) I didn’t like it, b) I thought it was not a motion picture and c) I wasn’t ready to make a movie at that point. So they asked me what I wanted to do because the picture had to start in something like four weeks. I said that if they wanted me to save them, I’d have to take something with which I was familiar to begin with. I was familiar with the character of Clouseau. I needed a detective, somebody to solve a murder. I couldn’t throw the whole thing out. I had to use the idea that the maid was accused of killing the chaffeur and this had to be solved. So I thought that Peter Sellers was just the natural thing and that now I was going to try to be as broad with the character as I could be. “How far can I go now in terms of Inspector Clouseau?” I wrote the screenplay and was on the stage in four weeks with it. Fortunately, it turned out to be a reasonably funny movie. It proved something for me—that if a gag is well-designed you can pull it off." (Blake Edwards' interview with Jean-Francois Hauduroy, Cahiers du cinéma, 1966) P.S: On this 62 years ago, "A Shot in the Dark" (1964) premiered in New York City, USA.

Paul Sorvino, who played Paulie in Goodfellas, nearly backed out of the film two days before production. The self-described “softie” had spent months agonizing over the role, convinced he didn’t have what it took to play a mafia boss. He explains… “I didn’t think I could do it, because it was not the kind of role that I felt I really had an affinity for. The externals were easy: middle-aged Italian man. The difficulty was in the lethality that I felt I didn’t possess. And so even though I wanted to do it, I was sort of faking when I went to the meeting and giving Martin the impression that I knew exactly what to do with it - when I had no idea what to do with it. But I wanted so much to be in a Scorsese movie. I guess he just figured I was capable of it. It was about two months of preparation to try to get this quality that I knew it called for. I was kind of agonizing over it - I was thinking, “I’m gonna ruin this movie.” I was looking for something to get out of it till two days before we started production. By virtue of constantly searching to find that kind of quality that killers have, I was preparing to go out one night, passed by the mirror to check for spinach in the teeth, and I jumped back. I literally frightened myself. I saw a look in my eyes that frightened me. ‘Who was that?’ I said, ‘That’s Paulie.’ And once I found it, the role became just a duck in water. It just was so easy to do.”
