Today, I rescued a young man from the streets of Nairobi along Moi Avenue. He approached me and requested that I take him to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. However, he had no travel documents or even a national identification card. After engaging him in a conversation, I realized that what he truly needed was help and specifically, mental health support. I decided to take him to Mathare Mental Hospital, but since he was fixated on going to the airport, I gently told him that I was taking him to Mathare International Airport. Upon arrival at the hospital and after an initial assessment, he was admitted for treatment. We contacted his mother, who at first didn’t want to be associated with him due to the many difficulties he had caused her. But I took time to speak with her, convincing her that her son needed help not rejection. I reminded her that despite all he had done, she shouldn't abandon him to the world to "teach him a lesson." What he needed most was love, care, and a chance at recovery.

All the tributes I've read about the dearly departed got me thinking about how, a lot of times, we wait until the funeral to give people their flowers... instead of while they are still alive to smell them. So, I want to be intentional about appreciating people who have had a profound influence and impact on my life while they are here. Today, I want to celebrate one of my mentors, Egbon Leke Alder. I'm a fiend for wisdom, and you would be hard pressed to find a mind wiser than his on this planet. My wife and I are convinced that he uses more of his brain power than most human beings. His intelligence is divine, his creativity is sublime, and his kindness? Truly, one of a kind. He is a genius in every sense of the word. When we were planning our campaign, I knew I had to "sit at his feet." I had no idea he was battling illness because he always found time to meet with my team and I repeatedly. He gave us counsel, strategy, and wisdom - the kind that even if you could put a price on it, we could never afford to pay. I didn't end up winning the election, but spending quality time with one of the greatest minds in Nigerian history? That's a win every single time and a personal highlight in my life. Egbon, I can offer you nothing but the prayers of a grateful heart. May God continue to prosper, protect, and preserve you. May He give you the desires of your heart and reward you for me. Long before many believed in the possibilities we now see across African fintech, Herbert challenged me to think bigger. He pushed me to be bold, stay resilient, and keep going even when the path was uncertain. I still hear his words: “Only the test of fire makes very fine steel.” He invested in people, in ideas, and in the future of Africa. His guidance and belief played a meaningful role in shaping my journey and the early steps that eventually led to building Flutterwave. At critical moments, his encouragement reminded me to hang in there and trust the process. His passing left a deep personal and professional void, and his legacy lives on in the lives he impacted, the institutions he built, and the dreams he helped ignite. Holland told me he was planning to attend. I insisted that he participate with us on the stand. He shared a very sacred experience when he teetered between life and death a few months before and what he learned about the importance of prayer. It is a message for all of us, and is shared in his open and transparent way of speaking. I will never forget his profound influence upon me and I look forward with great anticipation to our reunion in the years ahead.

While I do have my issues with the Digital Circus finale, this one scene stuck out to me with incredible reliability. To me, this scene represents what my relationship with Christ has been at multiple times in my life. I had thoroughly convinced myself that I was undeserving of His love and acceptance, and that I’d rather be left alone to wallow in my own misery. Thankfully He didn’t give up on me, and loved me despite my past flaws and mistakes. That’s instantly where my mind went when watching this in the theater for the first time a couple weeks ago, and has continued to stick in my mind since. How blessed I am to have a Savior who will always come for me, to show me His love even when I’ve messed up and don’t deserve it. That kind of love is what pushes me to be more like Christ every day, and while I’m not perfect, I hope to do my best. 🥹

Alan Jackson played his last show last night. He is one of the good ones. A patriot and Christ centered. He has a neurological disease which impedes his balance and ability to play the guitar. He is my favorite country singer of all time. He told stories. He made you not just hear, but FEEL what it is to be a “good ole boy”. He was also never afraid to be bold in his faith. But I have a more personal story about Alan Jackson I’d like to share and it is the reason I have always been a fan of him and his music. Back in 1992, I was going on my first real trip with my mom up to New York to see her sister and my cousins. It was the first time I had ever flown. Our flight left later in the evening, not quite a red-eye, but close. I think it was somewheres around 10 or 11pm. At the time, Charlotte Douglas Airport was way smaller and far less busy than it is now. So me and mom board the plane, and I take the window seat (as kids usually do). Me and mom are chit chatting, and she was doing her best to calm me. See, me and flying don’t really get along. Neither do me and heights - never have, prolly never will. To say I was a bit wound up about the flight would be an understatement. The plane is continuing to board, and there weren’t many folks on the plane. As memory best serves, it was maybe 1/3 full, if that. Everyone is seated, doors are shut, plane is ready to push. Then the pilot comes over the speaker to tell us there would be a slight delay as some folks were making their way to the plane. Door opens up, and 5-6 dudes get on the plane. All wearing stetsons and boots. The 3rd dude on to the plane stood out a little more because he had frills hanging off his coat and he was wearing a white stetson. He was noticeably taller than the rest as well. The first two dudes keep coming down the aisle and end up sitting right behind us. The third dude stops at our row, looks at my mom and me, tips his hat and says “Evenin, folks. How y’all doin?”, then takes the aisle seat right next to my mom. My mom, who rarely ever swore, then says “Holy shit. You’re Alan Jackson”. He says “Yes’m I am, and you are?”. So mom introduced us. But here’s what really sticks with me: Mom had told him I was a bit scared for my first flight. Wanna guess what Alan Jackson did? He asked if it was okay to pray with us. So he did. After which, we spent the entire flight chatting with Alan Jackson. He and his band even belted out a couple songs along the way. It is legit one of those memories I will never forget. I never got to see him to live. But I’d say this experience trumps any concert of his I could have went to. I think something like that speaks more to the man he is than his music. Here he is, just met this kid and his mom 5 minutes prior, and he is offering a prayer to calm my fears for my first flight. So, in closing - I pray Alan can find true peace in his retirement, and I pray that the Father will provide him with healing and assuage his suffering with the disease he has. Thank you for the prayer, Alan Jackson. Thank you for all the wonderful music, and thank you for never being afraid to profess your love for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Alan Jackson played his last show last night. He is one of the good ones. A patriot and Christ centered. He has a neurological disease which impedes his balance and ability to play the guitar. He is my favorite country singer of all time. He told stories. He made you not just hear, but FEEL what it is to be a “good ole boy”. He was also never afraid to be bold in his faith. But I have a more personal story about Alan Jackson I’d like to share and it is the reason I have always been a fan of him and his music. Back in 1992, I was going on my first real trip with my mom up to New York to see her sister and my cousins. It was the first time I had ever flown. Our flight left later in the evening, not quite a red-eye, but close. I think it was somewheres around 10 or 11pm. At the time, Charlotte Douglas Airport was way smaller and far less busy than it is now. So me and mom board the plane, and I take the window seat (as kids usually do). Me and mom are chit chatting, and she was doing her best to calm me. See, me and flying don’t really get along. Neither do me and heights - never have, prolly never will. To say I was a bit wound up about the flight would be an understatement. The plane is continuing to board, and there weren’t many folks on the plane.
