I have redesigned the first overworld map for my hack! It uses Yoshifanatic's new "Overworld Revolution" patch. It allows you to design OWs inside Lunar Magic's level editor, rather than the OW editor. You can make many more maps and much larger ones than was previously possible

Sidenote: You won't be walking around freely, this is just a debug feature. The music is a placeholder too. And here's the old version of the first map, made in a regular Mario World submap

This is probably the best map made in the history of SMW hacking, no joke. I hope that Yoshifanatic can make a version that makes the free roam debug mode actually work with solid terrain, even though getting 8x8 blocks to work separately in 16x16 tiles must be a right pain.

Lode Runner (1983) was the first game ever to include a level editor. Let that sink in for a second - the very first game that allowed you to create more levels! It came with 150 built-in levels, but the editor let you create as many new ones as you wanted, giving it endless replay value. I sometimes show old 80s games to my 15-year-old nephew to see if he likes them. Many simple ones don’t hold his attention, but when I showed him Lode Runner and explained just one level, he started playing the next levels by himself. I know it might sound overly sentimental, but seeing the younger generation play some old classics just makes me feel happy. Lode Runner starts easy so you can learn it quickly, but it gets really tough in the later stages. That “easy to learn, hard to master” style is perfect. You get some early wins to feel good, then it challenges you. With its simple but addictive gameplay, built-in level editor, and timeless idea, it’s maybe after all no surprise that even kids today still enjoy it.

While developing Raid on Bungeling Bay (1984), Will Wright built a map/level editor for the islands and factories. He discovered he had much more fun creating and tinkering with the maps than actually playing the helicopter shooter. That experience directly inspired him to make Sim City (1989). The map editor in Raid on Bungeling Bay became the foundation for the city-building simulation that evolved into Sim City. Here's a quote from an old interview: "To create this game I had to draw all these islands that the helicopter would go bomb... Instead, I wrote a separate program, a little utility, that would let me go around and build these islands real quick. I also wrote some code that could automatically put roads on the islands... Eventually I finished the shoot-’em-up game part, but for some reason I kept going back to the darn thing and making the building utilities more and more fancy." Thank you, Bungeling Bay map editor! You were the origin of gaming history!

After developing Raid on Bungeling Bay (1984), apparently Will Wright liked building maps for the game more than playing it, which ultimately led him to pivot and create a city-building simulation. It was also turned down by many publishers (until Maxis finally picked it up) because it had no clear win/lose condition - an oddity for 80s gaming. Just imagine if Maxis hadn’t taken the risk and the game had never been published...
