Good call by the Captain. I wouldn't fly with a loose yoke affecting pitch and roll. Maintenance inspection and return-to-service tests are the right course.

I applaud this crew's decision. Too bad they couldn't have caught the problem during their flight control check before take off though. I had a similar problem in a 737, control cables had been cut in the wheel well. Flight control failure is deemed an accident.

During the B787 startup, the stick shakers in the flight deck kick in as part of the normal stall warning self test. It just checks that the actuators under the control columns are working properly so the system is ready to give pilots that strong physical warning if needed. Basically, the shaker vibrates the yoke to feel like the real aerodynamic buffet you'd get when the plane is approaching a stall... high angle of attack. It’s a clear hands on alert so the crew knows to do something before things get dangerous. One of the important layers in Boeing’s stall protection setup.

It was 1/3 scale of the Vulcan and used to test flight characteristics of tailless aircraft. The C version had side by side seating, for this trial the left stick was direct link to control surfaces and right stick was fly by wire.😎

Always loved the professionalism of the Flight Control Room. This is an excellent example, with the internal control room loop for STS-93's launch with a misbehaving Columbia. In Shuttle's case, you had large backrooms of folks dealing with Main Engines and MPS (Main Propulsion System) and such, with a lead feeding the FCR console lead (in this case Booster), who then selects what to tell the Flight Director and CAPCOM relaying the key points to the crew. Incredible training and discipline, and all while the launch of several humans. #MissionControlMonday
