The USA and NATO have backed Russia into a corner, breaking several promises, including one made with President Gorbachev in 1990 that NATO would not expand an inch to the East if he agreed to the unification of Germany. Since then, NATO has expanded to include former Soviet states, a move Russia has protested over the years, knowing it poses a threat to its security. Ukraine shares a border with Russia, and Russia, as a major power, takes its security seriously. The USA would bomb Canada or Mexico if they ever formed a military alliance with Russia and China. Why? Because they share a land border with the USA, and the USA cannot have an adversary’s weapons on its borders. Kennedy made this clear during the Cuban missile crisis, threatening war when Russia placed missiles in Cuba, which, though not sharing a land border, is within the USA’s sphere of influence. So, why should Russia entertain the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, a country it shares a land border with? Why would Russia allow missiles on its border, something the USA would never accept, as history has shown? Don’t bring up Sweden and Finland as examples. Finland shares the longest border with Russia, but their entry into NATO came amid the Ukraine invasion when Putin couldn’t afford to spread the war further. Additionally, neither Finland nor Sweden are former Soviet states, which makes their situation different. Putin’s hands were tied, and he couldn’t do anything about it at that moment, even if he wanted to. The point, @daddyhope, is that your disdain for Trump shouldn’t cloud your judgment. Trump is right—the war in Ukraine must end. Zelensky has used this war to stay in power at Ukraine’s expense, allowing the USA and NATO to fight Russia through his country. Ukraine must guarantee never to join NATO, and NATO must stop expanding eastward, threatening Russia’s national security and putting Russia in a corner. No one should expect Russia to accept what the USA itself would not. And yes NATO has declared again and again that Ukraine would one day be part of NATO which promoted Putin to show what would happen if that was ever considered, infact the WEST led to the rise of people like Putin.
