Yesterday we lost another SEAL Legend and brother to suicide. Senior Chief Mike Day🙏🏿🔱. A couple of years ago my family and I were leaving church when my phone rang. It was Mike, which meant I had to take it. What I promised my wife would be a quick call turned into 2 hour conversation about life, storytelling and writing. Mike was struggling for a number of reasons I won’t get into, but what we discussed on that call seemed to give him hope. He was in the process of writing his life story, which became therapeutic for him and he wanted to ensure that it was written in a way that inspired people without exploiting the community. On that call, Mike talked me through his story, which was indeed beat out in a way that helped others and didn’t edify himself. I explained this to Mike, and I remember a sense of calm and hope coming over him. That calm and hope derived from the fact that through his story he would indeed be able to keep doing what he joined the Navy to do— help and serve people. One of my first trips ever for Flo was in November of 2013. I was sent to New York for Aaron Pico's senior level debut. He was a high school sophomore at that point. I remember looking over and seeing him warming up and then he just started a boxing routine. I asked him about it and he said whenever he was nervous his coach would tell him to go box, and it would calm him down. Pico has been thinking about throwing hands a long time (back when people worked out with corded head phones! 😂). I hope he wins tonight in his UFC debut! Let's go!
