How long is it lasting whilst running the app though? Seems like you'll be frequently charging it. That seems like more work than just having a look to see if it's finished once in a while

I assume this is the one? It looks like it's locked to "Straight Talk" and is only available as pre-paid, as cheap as a no-contract $25/month plan. But if it's pre-paid, you can just not pay and not have a plan. Motorolla sells them for $130ish? So I would need to subscribe to the cheapest plan for at least 4 months for them to just break even compared to the retail price, but I assume they get a decent discount.

Yes that is the one! great deal when using it for home automation projects. Goes toward my dream of one generic device I can buy and use for all sorts of use cases without modification.

note to anyone thinking about doing this with an old iphone: it's significantly harder to make a persistent background task on ios than it is on android, you have to do a weird workaround where your app wakes itself up at an interval to do whatever check you want

Do you know what's going on with the business end? Like are they subsidizing this by $ X ? Because just getting a bare android that boots up and is runnable seems like an opportunity.

definitely razor and blades model where they need you to buy a data plan for it to work for them. BOM and landed costs ~$80 Retail of unlocked device is $130 So selling for $30 is quite a gap. Part of the justification for them is cost of customer acquisition.

This man went to McDonald’s trying to get a “pup cup,” he claims he comes here often and gets them, however this time, the manager was there and told him they don’t do pup cups nor are they supposed to. He’s literally mad because they aren’t making him an item they don’t have on their menu nor do they sell, I doubt they have a button in the register for a side of whipped cream. So who are we siding with? Was the manager just following procedure or was he out of like for not being served an other they don’t sell?

This right here is exactly what I felt when I tried switching my main phone from iPhone to Android last year. The apps on Android are so bad they don’t even feel like they’re made for your phone. Plus many apps on Android simply lack a lot of features compared to iOS. For example, on WhatsApp on iOS, I can quickly swipe left on a message in a group chat to see which members have received and/or read my message. On Android, it takes a long press and 2 additional taps to access the same info. This was such a deal breaker for me who’s in a lot of group chats.

Back in Utah and back to grinding today. 3rd job of the day, this guy starts asking about the cost of my equipment. He then literally says “that feels irresponsible for a small busines don’t you think?” That annoyed me. Proceeded to do his $350 job in less than an hour. He was so shocked I was done that he started interrogating me about how many jobs I get done in a day. He didn’t like my answer. A lot of people really don’t like when their contractor isn’t poor.
