I never learned division like this. This is called short division (some call it horizontal division), and apparently hundreds of thousands of people are seeing it for the first time too. No long division setup, no writing out every subtraction step - just working through it left to right....

They are taking memorizing the math by adding extra steps to it. It takes longer and the Child will grow into an adult that can't do figures in their head because they didn't memorize the Multiplication or simple Math equations.

This is just long division presented with slightly different notation.

@EricaRN4USA This is how I learned. Short division and long division. No-brainer.

That's still long division , just less writing.

Works fine when the divisor is a single-digit number. Divide something by 12 and demonstrate.

Yes. This is the only way to do it. Long division is stupid and a waste of time.

I was around when they started screwing with math in the 60s. I was having problems and my dad simply looked at the problem, a couple of pencil strokes and he was done. I was amazed. Then when I showed him how we were taught to do it he just shook his head. PSSystem is a joke.

My daughter was taught division this way. I had to teach her long division. I believe this came from the U of C and Obama with Core Curriculum.

Note that all the numbers >= 5. It starts to break down if that is not the case (you need to "borrow" the other direction which get messier) although it still works. But as someone else mentions, long division was created for longer numbers not for trivial problems.

Every time i did this as a child, the teacher told me to show my work the "normal way". So the teacher will mark you wrong if you dont do it their way.

It only works if the divisor is single digit.

Much like most "hacks" like this, it works great on a simple problem. Try using it to figure out 26987/133. Stil solvable, but you just trade vertical workspace for horizontal workspace.

I took the stupid remainder nonsense and threw it out when I homeschooled my son. Replaced it with decimals and he understood division after a couple of lessons.

My family moved a lot as I grew up. My father build roads and the office moves daily. I learned to divide 6 different ways as I moved into new math and old math schools. I like the pyramid method best. I was struggling with my times tables and it made it easier.

This is long division with the subtraction done in the head and shittier notation when on a piece of paper. This will cause more errors. Bad.

If you multiply any number by 9 and then add up all the digits of the result, and add them up again until you are left with one digit, the result will be 9. This has nothing to do with the original post.

I like that. My teachers told me I wouldn't always have one of these, but I do, and I like it more.
