There is broad bipartisan agreement that student loan debt is a problem that needs to be addressed, yet Congress has failed to act. That's why I'm filing a discharge petition with Rep. Anna Paulina Luna to bring our bill to the floor. This would cap federal student loan interest at 2% so borrowers can actually get ahead, with no cost to taxpayers. If Members truly believe student loan debt is holding Americans back, then they should sign onto this discharge petition.

But starting on May 5th, U.S. Department of Education will resume involuntary collections for borrowers with defaulted federal student loans. Debt cannot be wiped away – it just ends up getting transferred to others. Why should Americans who didn’t go to college or went to college and responsibly paid back their loans – pay for other Americans’ student loans? If you take out a loan – you must pay it back.
