We’ve reached a point where some people outsource parenting, values and critical thinking to an algorithm then act surprised when the algorithm starts raising difficult questions. The interesting part isn’t that people make questionable choices we always have. It’s that attention can turn almost anything into a business model. If behavior that once attracted criticism now attracts engagement, maybe the algorithm didn’t change society. Maybe it simply became very good at showing us what people are willing to reward. We didn’t just put nonsense online. We gave it Wi-Fi, a ring light, a comment section… and somehow, a standing ovation. Perhaps the real audit isn’t only of the algorithm. It’s of what we keep choosing to click, share and applaud.
