Yesterday I drove to Columbus to testify before Ohio’s Joint Data Center Committee thinking it was a serious effort to protect Ohio communities. Today I found out several of the members have conflicts of interest. Ohioans are being told this committee exists to provide oversight and protect citizens from the impacts of massive data center development. But look at who is sitting on the committee. One co-chair owns and manages oil and gas companies, well services, and businesses connected to energy infrastructure. Another co-chair runs an industrial contracting company that could potentially benefit from large-scale infrastructure projects. Another member leads a commercial and industrial construction company. Several committee members have received campaign contributions from utility, energy, construction, and power-sector PACs. Meanwhile, these same politicians support policies promoting massive energy expansion for data centers. So here’s my question: How can Ohioans have confidence this committee is independent when so many members have professional, political, or financial ties to industries that stand to benefit from data center growth? I didn’t come to Columbus to participate in political theater. I came because Ohio families have legitimate questions about energy demand, water consumption, environmental impacts, property rights, privacy concerns, and the long-term consequences of building an AI and data center economy across our state. Instead of an independent watchdog, are we looking at a committee designed to reassure the public while the decisions have already been made? Ohioans deserve answers. Ohioans deserve transparency. And Ohioans deserve a committee that represents the public, not the industries that profit from the outcome. Was this committee created to protect Ohio citizens? Who's Really Profiting from Alberta's Data Centers? The Alberta government calls data centers a multi-billion-dollar opportunity. But what's the return for Albertans? These projects demand enormous amounts of electricity, natural gas, water and public infrastructure. They place new pressures on municipalities and local communities, yet the government has provided very little information about the long-term economic benefits to Albertans. How much provincial tax revenue will they generate? What will they cost taxpayers and how will they affect affordability and inflation? Why are municipalities and local residents being sidelined in the process? I'm not opposed to data centers. Alberta should absolutely compete for investment. But attracting investment at any cost isn't good government. If Albertans are expected to provide the land, infrastructure, energy and public services that make these projects possible, then Albertans should be the first to benefit - not the last. The few manufacturing plants, notably in steel and construction products, will get a temporary boost while they are building Anduril plants and data centers. The tariffs that Trump proposed would bring back manufacturing, are no more. That's over. Now, Trump has diverted manufacturing to India so there are no supply chain disruptions, from China and Tiawan. Not the US. Our labor is too expensive. They've told you a million times. Trump’s reindustrialization approach in Ohio centers on tariffs, energy abundance, deregulation/tax incentives, and attracting large-scale private/foreign investment in energy, AI/data infrastructure, defense, and related supply chains. The jobs are 90% temporary. Energy abundance is for the demands of data centers; new gas plants on data center campuses not tied to the grid and nuclear power. It's a hard pill to swallow. Data center developers have to earn the trust of the communities where we build, and that starts with complete transparency. Bring your own power, be clear about water usage and emissions, create high paying jobs, and make sure the economic benefits are understood by everyone. That’s exactly what we intend to do in Box Elder. We have work to do to earn the community’s support, but the facts will be public, from water and power to jobs and tax revenue. If you want to build in a community for decades, you have a responsibility to become an asset to it.

1/ Maine just hit pause on giant AI data centers. Why hasn’t Ohio? The Maine House passed a bill to temporarily ban new large data centers — anything 20 megawatts or bigger — until November 2027. That’s enough power for over 15,000 homes each. They want time to study the impact on the electricity grid, water usage, and the environment. 2/ Electricity bills have already increased significantly in recent years. Local towns have pushed back against these projects. Maine is saying: we need to understand the consequences before allowing more development. The debate over the Utah data center project has grown far beyond Utah. My position remains simple, look at the facts. Every permit, design plan, environmental review, and public filing will be available for scrutiny. The project should be judged on data, not misinformation. What started as a local controversy is now a national story. Following Senator Cotton’s call for a DOJ investigation, questions are being raised about who is funding opposition campaigns against data centers, power infrastructure, and development projects across the country. As litigation moves forward, discovery and forensic audits could provide greater transparency into where that funding is coming from and what role outside groups may be playing.

If you're in Mississauga or anywhere in the GTA where massive AI data centres are being proposed, this is worth watching. Everyone talks about the investment and the AI boom. Not enough people are talking about what comes with it. Enormous power demands. Massive water consumption. Noise. Pressure on the grid. Environmental concerns. And in some cases, surprisingly few permanent jobs considering the sheer size of these projects. I'm not against data centres. They're obviously going to be part of our future. But before cities start rolling out the red carpet, residents should know exactly what they're signing up for and what the community is actually getting in return.
