I still think about Babylon’s opening sequence. Not many directors are capable of pulling of musical set pieces like Damien Chazelle. This is sort of his corner. I still maintain this film deserved Oscar recognition. Hate that this was basically snubbed across the board.

Eddington didn’t earn any #Oscar nominations today but I don’t think that came as a big surprise to many- at least not to me. Surprising or not, I still think this film deserved Oscar recognition & was one of the year’s best films. Not to mention Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding.

Joker: Folie à Deux sort of took some of the luster away from Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning work in the original Joker. I had such high hopes for this film & really wanted to like it but this is still one of the biggest disappointments of the decade for me, which I hate to say.

I think many people who complain about the historical accuracy of this film are unaware that it is based on Shakespeare's adaptation of Henry V and his version of events, rather than actual historical events. The King is still one of Timothée Chalamet's best works so far

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of the few films that falls in the “science-fiction/romantic-comedy” genre & for the life of me, I can’t think of many other rom-coms that sort of cut across multiple genres like this film. This film is so original, it went all the way to the Oscars & won Best Original Screenplay. There just aren’t many stories out there like this one.

Eddie Murphy deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Dreamgirls. Murphy was the heavy favorite going into the Oscars. His loss was shocking then & it’s still shocking now. Murphy is capable of so much as a dramatic actor. I hope he returns to roles like this.

I still maintain that Brad Pitt’s performance in Babylon was one the best of his career. It surprises me that he never received any real #Oscar recognition for this movie- maybe because it came right after OUATIH, who knows. But Pitt couldn’t be better. This scene specifically.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was met with a good amount of criticism upon its release in 2006 but I never understood the hate for this film. The filmmaking is exceptional & includes a number of memorable set pieces. The ending is also unforgettable. Not as good as the first but still a damn good summer blockbuster.

Timothée Chalamet deserved a second-straight Best Actor Oscar nomination for Beautiful Boy. Chalamet is outstanding in this film and brings to life the pain addiction causes. This is a really sophisticated performance for a young actor. I still don’t know why he was snubbed.

Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival has repeatedly received high praise from Steven Spielberg. I think there are a handful of meaningful similarities between Arrival & Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I personally prefer Arrival, this deserved the Oscar for Best Picture & I think it’s one of the best science fiction films in Cinema history. I still can’t believe we’re getting a new Denis Villeneuve film this year.

I still think about Ralph Fiennes’s performance in Conclave. God, he was so good here. I’m not sure if he deserved the Oscar over Brody but this is as good of a performance as I can remember from an actor who’s spent his life on stage or in front of a camera. What a performance.
