In the official SH2 novel he quickly understood her trauma even though she never told him, and he always excused her aggression because he understood her pain. An example is this scene. He knows she feels unwanted and says he's happy to see her (unlike her mother who didn't want to see her) because he wants to bring her some comfort. He also suggests they should leave the town together, even though he hasn't found Mary. He never suggested the same to Laura, even though she's a child and she's alone.
